At Affirm, we exist for the moments that matter—giving people a clear, predictable way to pay over time, with no hidden fees, no surprises, and no tradeoffs on what matters most. Affirm’s Identity team is mission-critical to the customer checkout experience. When a customer chooses Affirm, one of the first steps is an identity check, and our ability to make the right decision directly impacts conversion, revenue, fraud exposure, and regulatory compliance. Our team owns Identity for all markets outside North America, playing a key role in Affirm’s international expansion. We are responsible for KYC, user lifecycle management, and identity decisioning across multiple regulatory environments. This work is about shaping how Affirm adapts its core Identity platform to new market dynamics, customer expectations, and compliance requirements. We are a team of six engineers based across Spain and Poland. We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer who can turn ambiguous business and customer problems into reliable, well-designed technical solutions. In this role, you will help shape our quarterly technical direction, translate team goals into concrete projects, and identify cross-cutting risks, tradeoffs, and opportunities. You should be comfortable designing across system boundaries, driving collaboration with partner teams, and advocating for technical investments that improve long-term execution. We’re looking for someone who takes ownership beyond shipping code: raising code quality and review standards, making performance, availability, and scale tradeoffs explicit, and improving the operational health of the systems they own. You’ll help reduce toil, create useful playbooks, mentor engineers, support new hires and interns, and contribute to high-signal hiring. Most importantly, we’re excited to work with someone who leaves things better than they found them, communicates clearly across audiences, uses customer feedback to influence technical plans, and helps the team continuously improve. This is a deeply technical, hands-on coding role where feature velocity and operational excellence go hand-in-hand. You’ll spend most of your week in the codebase - leveraging AI tools to write robust Kotlin and Python, ship impactful features, investigate complex production issues, and keep our systems rock-solid and reliable. This is a high-visibility, high-impact role for someone who wants to work on foundational systems that directly enable Affirm’s global growth. What You'll Do · You will be responsible for owning and delivering quarterly goals for your team, leading engineers on your team through ambiguity to solve open-ended problems, and ensuring that everyone is supported throughout delivery. · You will support your peers and stakeholders in the product development lifecycle by collaborating with product management, design & analytics by participating in ideation, articulating technical constraints, and partnering on decisions that properly consider risks and trade-offs. · You will proactively identify project, process, technology or business issues, advocate for them, and lead in solving them. · You will support the operations and availability of your team’s artifacts by creating and monitoring metrics, escalating when needed, and supporting “keep the lights on” & on-call efforts. · You will foster a culture of quality and ownership on your team by setting or improving code review and design standards for your team, and advocating for them beyond your team through your writing and tech talks. · You will help develop talent on your team by providing feedback and guidance, and leading by example. What We Look For · You have 4+ years of experience designing, developing and launching backend systems at scale using languages like Python or Kotlin. · You have a track record of developing highly available distributed systems using technologies like AWS, MySQL and Kubernetes. · You have experience defining a technical plan for the delivery of a significant feature or system component with an elegant, simple and extensible design. You write high quality code that is easily understood and used by others. · You are proficient at making significant changes in a large code base, and have developed a suite of tools and practices that enable you and your team to do so safely. · Your experience demonstrates that you take ownership of your growth, proactively seeking feedback from your team, your manager, and your stakeholders. · You have strong verbal and written communication skills that support effective collaboration with our global engineering team. At Affirm, we exist for the moments that matter—giving people a clear, predictable way to pay over time, with no hidden fees, no surprises, and no tradeoffs on what matters most. The InfoSec team protects Affirm’s systems and data from evolving threats. We manage security risk, monitor vulnerabilities, and enforce protective controls across the company. The team leads incident response, compliance, identity and access management, and employee training. Our goal is to ensure that security is built into every system and decision at Affirm. We maintain a secure, trustworthy environment so the business can operate and grow with confidence. In this role, you'll build and run Affirm's end-to-end security review process for enterprise AI/LLM systems evaluating architecture, prioritizing AI-specific risks, and designing the controls and guardrails that let Affirm adopt AI safely, partnering across Security, Legal, Privacy, Compliance, IT, and Engineering to make it scalable and repeatable. What you’ll do You will lead and continuously improve Affirm's enterprise AI security review process evaluating the architecture, data flows, permissions, and design of internal AI tools, agentic/MCP-based systems, and AI features — and embed security requirements into the design phase. You will threat model AI/LLM-based systems and their data flows for risks such as prompt injection, insecure output handling, excessive agency, tool-permission abuse, data poisoning, and sensitive-data exposure, and drive remediation. You will review source code, system prompts, agent configurations, and tool/permission manifests (e.g., MCP definitions), and help tool owners build security-focused test cases and red-team/eval scenarios to verify requirements before launch. You will design and build security guardrails and tooling for AI systems permission boundaries, authn/authz for agentic tools and MCP servers, data-handling controls, logging/monitoring, and policy-as-code (Python, IaC) — to enforce and automate AI security. You will evaluate the AI capabilities of third-party SaaS vendors (e.g., Notion, Slack, Google Workspace) as part of vendor and SaaS security reviews and drive risk-based adoption decisions. You will identify emerging classes of AI/agentic security vulnerabilities, develop mitigations before they become incidents, and contribute to AI-specific incident response playbooks as a senior escalation point. You will lead cross-functional AI security initiatives to closure, advise technical and executive stakeholders as an internal point of expertise, and stay current on the AI security landscape (OWASP LLM Top 10, MITRE ATLAS) to translate new research into practical controls. What we look for You are a seasoned security engineer with hands-on experience designing, evaluating, and maintaining security architecture for AI/LLM-based systems, plus deep expertise in enterprise security systems, processes, and controls. You have practical experience threat modeling and reviewing AI/LLM applications (e.g., against the OWASP Top 10 for LLM Applications) and securing agentic systems and tool-calling frameworks — MCP servers/clients, tool-permission models, and agent-to-tool trust boundaries. You have built AI governance artifacts (acceptable use policy, data-handling standards, vendor/model risk assessments) and evaluated AI capabilities within SaaS platforms (e.g., Notion AI, Slack AI, Google Workspace AI, GitHub Copilot) as part of vendor reviews. You have experience with enterprise tools for AI visibility and control (e.g., CASB, IDP/Okta) and familiarity with the corporate systems where AI is adopted (OpenAI, Anthropic, GitHub, Google Workspace, Slack, Notion, Jira). You can build security tooling, guardrails, and detections with Python or similar, and deploy cloud services and policy-as-code using Infrastructure as Code (Terraform or similar); familiarity with Kubernetes and AWS. You understand how LLMs and agentic systems are built (RAG, embeddings, fine-tuning, tool use) and authn/authz models (OAuth2, SAML, service-account/non-human identities) for agentic and machine-to-machine access, with strong application-architecture and threat-modeling fundamentals. You can lead cross-functional initiatives across Security, Engineering, Legal, Privacy, and Compliance and drive them to closure, and communicate effectively with technical and executive audiences. Experience in regulated environments (SOC 2, PCI DSS) and applying IAM to non-human/agent identities is a plus. This posting is for an existing vacancy This remote role is open only to candidates residing in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, or Saskatchewan. Senior Software Engineer, Affirm Bank

Remotefull timeSeniorUnited States (Remote)
Apply Now

At Affirm, we exist for the moments that matter—giving people a clear, predictable way to pay over time, with no hidden fees, no surprises, and no tradeoffs on what matters most. About the Role Affirm is building its own bank — and this role sits in the engineering team that runs it. We're looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join a deliberately small, AI-native team that owns the systems behind Affirm's bank: vendor-integrated banking infrastructure, durable workflows, data platform, and the operational tooling that holds it all together. You'll work alongside other senior engineers, with direct exposure to senior bank and Affirm leadership, to launch the bank's deposit product, drive loan originations through the bank entity, and bring card issuing online in time. This is a rare opportunity to shape a new business from its very first systems — a startup-like build inside an established company. You'll be one of the first engineers on Affirm's bank, moving with the speed, autonomy, and ownership of an early-stage team while leveraging Affirm's brand, distribution, and consumer reach. The team is small and AI-native, the surface area is broad, and the work meaningfully matters — every system you ship serves real customers under a real bank charter. The systems you build and the standards you set will directly determine what the bank becomes. What You'll Do Own bank systems end-to-end. Design, build, integrate, operate, and own incident response for the bank's core technical surfaces: cloud infrastructure, data platform, durable workflow orchestration, core banking configuration, CI/CD, networking, and the Bank ↔ Affirm Inc integration. Generalist breadth is expected. Be a force multiplier on a small team. Set and improve code review and design standards, lift the bar on examiner-readable documentation, and make the team you join more effective than the team you found. Every Senior IC on this team has outsized influence on what gets built and how. Ship AI-first. Lean on AI tools and agentic workflows as a multiplier for code, design review, runbook generation, and operations. Push yourself and your teammates on what an AI-leveraged team can deliver. Own vendor relationships. Carry one or more of the bank's third-party vendor relationships end-to-end — integration, operations, escalation, and audit. The bank's tech stack is intentionally vendor-leveraged, and ownership of those relationships is an engineering responsibility. Build for examiners. Partner with Legal, Compliance, Risk, and Internal Audit to factor in compliance from day one. Write decisions, designs, and runbooks to a standard that holds up under examiner and audit review. Own the operational posture of your work. Set up monitoring, alerting, runbooks, and the practices that keep the bank's systems reliable, observable, and audit-ready. The bank operates with a small operational footprint by design — help keep it that way. You will support the operations and availability of your team’s artifacts by creating and monitoring metrics, escalating when needed, and supporting “keep the lights on” & on-call efforts. Influence beyond the team. Communicate technical strategy, tradeoffs, and constraints clearly to non-engineering stakeholders (bank executives, Compliance, Risk), and engineers outside the bank. The bank doesn't operate in isolation, and the relationships you build with non-bank engineers shape how cleanly the integration boundary works. Help grow talent as the team grows. As new engineers join over time, they'll join an engineering function whose practices and standards you helped establish. Provide feedback, mentor peers, and lead by example. What We Look For 6+ years of software engineering experience, with senior-strong, hands-on builder credentials and a track record of taking ownership end-to-end through launch and operations Comfortable in ambiguity — you move fast, ask hard questions, and take ownership before being asked, while balancing speed with engineering judgment Bias toward simplicity — experience operating in or building toward a small, lean engineering culture where the engineering bar is high and the surface area is kept intentionally tight Hungry to leverage AI to drive outcomes — fluent with AI-assisted development tools (Claude, Cursor, Codex, agentic workflows) and actively pushing yourself and your team to use them as a multiplier for code quality, velocity, and what a deliberately small team can ship Strong systems thinking across public cloud infrastructure (AWS preferred), infrastructure-as-code (Terraform), and cloud data platforms (Snowflake or comparable) Regulated-environment experience — direct work in banking, payments, securities, healthcare, or another setting subject to external examination, where the work involves examiner-facing documentation and decisions Comfortable as the technical face of your work to non-engineering stakeholders — Compliance, Risk, Finance, outside counsel, and examiners — and able to document decisions so they hold up under audit review Exceptional written and verbal communication — you can distill complex technical, regulatory, and operational concepts into clear narratives for executives and non-engineering audiences This position requires either equivalent practical experience or a Bachelor’s degree in a related field Nice to have Prior work inside a bank, neobank, Banking-as-a-Service provider, card issuer/processor, or fintech with a chartered bank subsidiary Direct experience with a de novo bank launch, an early-stage bank buildout, or a greenfield regulated platform Hands-on experience with a bank core, card processing / issuer processor integration, or digital bank experience integration Hands-on experience standing up a greenfield cloud organization — fresh cloud org, IAM model, and data platform — under a tight security posture Familiarity with the regulatory framework that shapes the work: FDIC examinations, GLBA / Reg P (affiliate data sharing), BSA/AML, Reg E, Reg DD, Reg Z, model risk, and third-party risk management Benefits 100% employer-subsidized medical, dental, and vision coverage for employees and dependents Flexible spending wallets for technology, food, lifestyle, and family formation Competitive vacation and holiday schedules Employee Stock Purchase Plan Base Pay Grade - N Equity Grade - USA 9 Employees new to Affirm typically come in at the start of the pay range. Affirm focuses on providing a simple and transparent pay structure which is based on a variety of factors, including location, experience and job-related skills. Base pay is part of a total compensation package that may include monthly stipends for health, wellness and tech spending, and benefits (including 100% subsidized medical coverage, dental and vision for you and your dependents). In addition, the employees may be eligible for equity rewards offered by Affirm Holdings, Inc. (parent company). USA base pay range (CA, WA, NY, NJ, CT) per year: $195,000 - $255,000 USA base pay range (all other U.S. states) per year: $173,000 - $233,000 Please note that visa sponsorship is not available for this position. #LI-Remote Remote-first with flexibility built in Affirm is proud to be a remote-first company. Staff Software Engineer, Affirm Bank

Remotefull timeLead / StaffUnited States (Remote)
Apply Now

At Affirm, we exist for the moments that matter—giving people a clear, predictable way to pay over time, with no hidden fees, no surprises, and no tradeoffs on what matters most. About the Role Affirm is building its own bank — and this role is one of the most senior individual-contributor seats on the engineering team that runs it. We're looking for a Staff Software Engineer to be a technical anchor for a deliberately small, AI-native team that owns the systems behind Affirm's bank: vendor-integrated banking infrastructure, the data platform, and the operational tooling that holds it all together. You'll set technical direction across that surface area, own the hardest problems on the team — including the Bank ↔ Affirm Inc integration boundary — and operate with direct exposure to senior bank and Affirm leadership. This is a rare opportunity to shape a new business from its very first systems — a startup-like build inside an established company — at a level of ownership that goes beyond delivering your own projects. As a Staff engineer here you set the bar: the architecture, the standards, and the technical strategy that the rest of the team builds against. The team is small and AI-native, the surface area is broad, and the decisions you make carry far — every system you ship serves real customers under a real bank charter, and the patterns you establish determine what the bank becomes. What You'll Do Set technical direction across the bank's systems. Own the medium-to-long-term technical strategy for the bank's core surfaces — cloud infrastructure, data platform, core banking configuration, CI/CD, networking, and the Bank ↔ Affirm Inc integration — and make the architecture calls the rest of the team builds against. Generalist breadth is expected; you go deep where the risk is highest. Own the hardest problems end-to-end. Personally design, build, integrate, and operate the most ambiguous and highest-stakes pieces of the stack, and own incident response for them. You take the problems no one else can fully scope and turn them into well-defined systems with clear failure domains, monitoring, and runbooks. Be the force multiplier on a small team. Set and hold the bar for code review, design review, and examiner-readable documentation. Establish the patterns and standards that let a deliberately small team punch far above its size, and level up every engineer who joins after you. Ship AI-first, and push the frontier of it. Treat AI tools and agentic workflows as a load-bearing capability for code, design review, runbook generation, and operations — and actively push yourself and the team on what an AI-leveraged engineering function can deliver in place of additional headcount. Lead vendor selection and ownership. Drive evaluation, integration, and ongoing oversight of the bank's third-party platforms across the core, data, identity, observability, and card-processing stacks. Carry the bank's most critical vendor relationships end-to-end: integration, operations, escalation, and audit. Define the integration boundary with Affirm Inc. Set the domain edges, data flows, and integration patterns between the bank and Affirm Inc so the bank's products work seamlessly inside the Affirm ecosystem while preserving the legal and regulatory separation the charter requires. Drive this across Affirm Inc engineering teams whose systems integrate with the bank's. Build for examiners. Partner with Legal, Compliance, Risk, BSA/AML, Finance, and Internal Audit so compliance is a property of the product from day one. The systems you design are the artifacts FDIC and state examiners will inspect — design and document them to a standard that holds up under examination and audit review. Own the operational posture of the bank's systems. Set the reliability, observability, alerting, runbook, incident-response, and disaster-recovery practices that keep the bank standalone-operable and audit-ready, while keeping the operational footprint intentionally small. You will support the operations and availability of your team’s artifacts by creating and monitoring metrics, escalating when needed, and supporting “keep the lights on” & on-call efforts. Influence up and across the organization. Communicate technical strategy, tradeoffs, and constraints with clarity to bank executives, the Bank Board, Compliance, Risk — and to engineers outside the bank across the broader Affirm org. The relationships you build beyond the team shape how cleanly the integration boundary works. Help grow the team and the bar. As engineers join, they inherit a function whose architecture, practices, and standards you helped set. Mentor peers, provide high-signal feedback, contribute to hiring, and lead by example. What We Look For 8+ years of software engineering experience, with staff-level, hands-on builder credentials and a track record of owning ambiguous, high-stakes systems end-to-end through launch and operations Comfortable owning ambiguity at the largest scale on the team — you move fast, make the tough prioritization calls, take ownership before being asked, and balance speed with the engineering judgment the hardest decisions require Hungry to leverage AI to drive outcomes — fluent with AI-assisted development tools (Claude, Cursor, Codex, agentic workflows) and actively pushing yourself and your team to use them as a multiplier for code quality, velocity, and what a deliberately small team can ship Bias toward simplicity — experience building toward a small, lean engineering culture that rewards "buy over build", a default-deny posture, and standalone-operability over an abundance of tooling A track record of setting technical direction — you've defined architecture and multi-quarter technical strategy for systems beyond your own projects, and led the execution of it across engineers and teams without needing a management title to do so Deep systems thinking across public cloud infrastructure (AWS preferred), infrastructure-as-code (Terraform), and cloud data platforms (Snowflake or comparable) — you understand their failure modes and tradeoffs, not just their surface APIs Regulated-environment experience — direct work in banking, payments, securities, healthcare, or another setting subject to external examination, where the work involves examiner-facing documentation and decisions Direct experience selecting, integrating, and operating meaningful third-party platforms under operational ownership after launch Comfortable as the technical face of the work to non-engineering stakeholders — bank executives, the Board, Compliance, Risk, Finance, and examiners — and able to document decisions so they hold up under audit review Exceptional written and verbal communication — you can distill complex technical, regulatory, and operational concepts into clear narratives for executives, boards, and non-engineering audiences This position requires either equivalent practical experience or a Bachelor’s degree in a related field Nice to have Prior work inside a bank, neobank, Banking-as-a-Service provider, card issuer/processor, or fintech with a chartered bank subsidiary Direct experience with a de novo bank launch, an early-stage bank buildout, or a greenfield regulated platform Hands-on experience with a bank core, card processing / issuer processor integration, or digital bank experience integration Hands-on experience standing up a greenfield cloud organization — fresh cloud org, IAM model, and data platform — under a tight, default-deny security posture Familiarity with the regulatory framework that shapes the work: FDIC examinations, GLBA / Reg P (affiliate data sharing), BSA/AML, Reg E, Reg DD, Reg Z, model risk, and third-party risk management Compensation & Location Base Pay Grade - P Equity Grade - USA 13 Employees new to Affirm typically come in at the start of the pay range.
