Join the team redefining how the world experiences design. Hey, g'day, mabuhay, kia ora, 你好, hallo, vítejte! Thanks for stopping by. We know job hunting can be a little time consuming and you're probably keen to find out what's on offer, so we'll get straight to the point. Where and how you can work Our flagship campus is in Sydney. We also have a campus in Melbourne. But you have choice in where and how you work, we trust our Canvanauts to choose the balance that empowers them and their team to achieve their goals. What you’d be doing in this role As Canva scales change continues to be part of our DNA. But we like to think that's all part of the fun. So this will give you the flavour of the type of things you'll be working on when you start, but this will likely evolve. You'll design and maintain lightweight SDKs, dashboards, and CI/PR checks that surface key performance metrics (LCP, INP, CLS). You'll embed OpenTelemetry standards and extend data pipelines that ingest billions of real-user events every day. You'll partner with platform and infrastructure teams to ensure low-overhead metric collection, shipping reusable libraries, CLIs, and tools. You'll launch "no-merge-if-slower" checks that statistically flag or block regressions, with developer-friendly diff reports. You'll run end-to-end investigations to profile, reproduce, and eliminate systemic bottlenecks using Chrome DevTools, Lighthouse, and similar tools. You'll mine real-user and synthetic data to surface high-ROI opportunities for fixes and improvements in the monitoring tools. You're probably a match if JavaScript frontend expertise – proven experience designing, building, and shipping rich JS/TypeScript + React interfaces. Full-stack fluency – comfortable diving into Node-based services and tools, data pipelines, and modern CI/CD workflows Data-driven mindset – balance intuition with evidence, design statistically sound experiments, and let numbers guide your decisions. Clear communicator – transform a flame-graph or p95 spike into an engaging narrative for engineers, PMs, execs, and other stakeholders. Stakeholder influence – adept at working across multiple org levels, aligning priorities, and driving action in product, platform, and leadership circles. Nice to haves: Deep web-performance knowledge – expert understanding of rendering pipelines, main-thread bottlenecks, network protocols, and the latest performance APIs. Large-scale observability & RUM experience – hands-on with Real User Monitoring, OpenTelemetry, Datadog, Looker, Mode, or similar systems processing millions of events per minute. Strong TypeScript chops – proficiency crafting robust, typed code across both client and server. About the team Our ambition hasn’t changed since day one: make Canva the fastest graphic design platform on the planet. As a Senior Engineer in the Performance Monitoring team you’ll lead the charge—building tools, shaping culture, and guiding engineering practices so that brilliant performance is the default, not a nice-to-have. Make What's in it for you? Achieving our crazy big goals motivates us to work hard - and we do - but you'll experience lots of moments of magic, connectivity and fun woven throughout life at Canva, too. We also offer a range of benefits to set you up for every success in and outside of work. Here's a taste of what's on offer: Equity packages - we want our success to be yours too Inclusive parental leave policy that supports all parents & carers An annual Vibe & Thrive allowance to support your wellbeing, social connection, office setup & more Flexible leave options that empower you to be a force for good, take time to recharge and supports you personally Check out lifeatcanva.com for more info. Other stuff to know We make hiring decisions based on your experience, skills and passion, as well as how you can enhance Canva and our culture. Staff Software Engineer - Export

On-sitefull timeLead / StaffSydney, Australia

Hey, g'day, mabuhay, kia ora, 你好, hallo, vítejte! Thanks for stopping by. We know job hunting can be a little time consuming and you're probably keen to find out what's on offer, so we'll get straight to the point. What you'd be doing in this role As Canva scales, change continues to be part of our DNA. But we like to think that's all part of the fun. So this will give you the flavour of the type of things you'll be working on when you start, but this will likely evolve. You'd be the second Staff Engineer on Export, splitting the domain with our existing Staff Engineer so neither of us is a single point of failure on the hardest parts of the system. At the moment, this role is focused on: Owning the technical direction of how Canva renders designs into files, including our Chromium-based export pipeline, and setting the architecture that keeps it reliable as both Canva's editor and Chromium itself keep moving Being the person the team turns to on the hardest rendering problems: upgrade breakages, rendering race conditions, and production incidents caused by upstream Chromium changes Deciding how we absorb upstream change rather than react to it, which covers monitoring and testing infrastructure that catches Chromium regressions before users do, and designs that survive Chromium's frequent output structure changes Setting the direction for PDF accessibility and compliance (PDF/UA, WCAG) across exported files for our Enterprise customers, and making the calls on how deeply we tag, where we draw the line, and what we build versus buy Leading on export reliability and performance at the scale of over 50 million weekly downloads, spanning format optimisation, distributed systems design, and the failure modes that only show up at that volume Raising the level of the engineers around you through design review, pairing on gnarly debugging sessions, and the kind of documentation that turns one person's Chromium knowledge into the team's Working across the Editing Platform group and beyond it, so that teams shipping new editor features know their work will hold up when someone hits download You're probably a match if You have deep experience with Chromium or another browser rendering engine, and you've worked inside it rather than just around it You're comfortable in C++ when a problem takes you into a large third-party codebase, and you can build a clear picture of code you didn't write A background in rendering pipelines, graphics programming, or print production systems You're a strong Java backend engineer, that's what our product is built on You've owned a technical domain end to end: you set the architecture, made the trade-offs, and lived with the consequences You've debugged layered systems where the problem spans multiple codebases and languages, and you've led others through that kind of investigation You bring the engineers around you along with you, through mentoring, design review, and the standards you hold You've built or maintained systems where upstream dependencies change frequently, and you have a view on how to make that sustainable Nice to have: PDF specification knowledge, or experience with PDF generation and post-processing Experience with accessibility standards in document or file output About the team The Export team sits within the Editing Platform group and owns one of Canva's most critical workflows: transforming designs into downloadable files that users can share, print, and bring to life. Over 50 million people download their creations through us every week. We focus on three things: reliability users can count on, speed that keeps pace with their creativity, and flexibility across every format and use case. Beyond the main download flow, we power print production, enable AI model training, generate thumbnails, and make sure every new editor feature works seamlessly when someone hits that download button. As a Staff Software Engineer here, you'd be shaping how one of Canva's highest-leverage systems evolves, and the decisions you make will be felt by every team that ships something a user needs to download. Other stuff to know We make hiring decisions based on your experience, skills and passion, as well as how you can enhance Canva and our culture. When you apply, please tell us the pronouns you use and any reasonable adjustments you may need during the interview process. Production Engineering Manager

Hey, g'day, mabuhay, kia ora, 你好, hallo, vítejte! Thanks for stopping by. We know job hunting can be a little time consuming and you're probably keen to find out what's on offer, so we'll get straight to the point. What you'd be doing in this role This role leads Core, one of Production Engineering's two teams. You'll lead a team of software engineers who own Production Engineering's services and take on broader engineering problems that cut across multiple teams and groups. Core complements our Embedded team: where Embedded tackles targeted problems inside other parts of Canva, Core can take the strongest ideas and turn them into capability that works more broadly across the organisation. Your job is to help the team turn complex, sometimes loosely defined problems into focused engineering goals and get them delivered. You'll stay close enough to the technical work to challenge assumptions, understand trade-offs and help engineers make strong decisions, while giving them the autonomy to own the detail. Core is still taking shape. Several in flight projects have carried over from Reliability Foundations, and as those roll off through the rest of the year, you'll help define the team's next phase by setting its focus, priorities and the problems Core takes on next. You'll also help shape how initiatives are structured and measured, and turn lessons from individual pieces of work into capability with broader reach and impact across Canva. You'll also own the day-to-day health of the team: setting clear priorities, coaching engineers directly, creating psychological safety and helping their team develop organisational fluency and influence. Looking ahead, this role will help build: Reliable services at scale: Help Core's services and capabilities keep pace as Production Engineering grows and more teams come to depend on their skills and expertise. Standards worth reusing: Turn lessons from individual problems and engagements into engineering practices and capabilities that can be applied more broadly. A strong Core–Embedded loop: Build the feedback loops that let targeted learning from Embedded become reusable capability through Core. Growing engineering depth: Coach engineers to take on increasingly complex technical and cross-team problems as Core's scope grows. You’re probably a match We'd love to hear from you if you fit one or more of these. You don't need to meet all of them, but the more the better and if you join the team, we're invested in helping you grow. Experience Leading engineers: You've led software engineers through complex or ambiguous technical work and know how to coach people to grow their skills and autonomy. Production exposure: You've worked in software environments where reliability, scalability and production risk genuinely mattered. Delivery ownership: You've taken significant technical initiatives from understanding the problem through to delivery, including work spanning multiple teams. Driving adoption: You've helped teams adopt new tools, practices or ways of working, even when they were busy or already had an established approach. Engineering leadership: You can communicate technical trade-offs clearly, set direction without prescribing every decision, and create an environment where engineers can challenge ideas, learn and do their best work. Technical knowledge CS fundamentals: A strong grounding in computer science fundamentals, including concurrency, multithreading and data structures. Language depth: Enough depth in languages such as Go, Python, Java or C++ to engage meaningfully with designs, implementation choices and technical trade-offs. Systems knowledge: Strong working knowledge of system internals, networking and cloud platforms such as AWS or GCP. Systems thinking: Comfortable reasoning through ambiguous problems spanning multiple components and constraints, with a strong understanding of system design, architecture and engineering patterns. Reliability engineering: Familiarity with observability, capacity, failure modes and the operational characteristics of production systems. Scale and criticality: Experience working in large-scale or high-criticality environments where reliability failures have meaningful consequences for users, systems or the business. Nice to have SRE/PE management: Prior experience leading Site Reliability Engineering, Production Engineering or a closely related function. Infrastructure exposure: Experience with large-scale storage, CDN, networking or distributed infrastructure. Growing technical leaders: A history of developing engineers who can coach others and take on increasingly complex work. Function-building: Experience helping shape the scope, ways of working or identity of a technical team while it was still evolving. About the Group and Team Production Engineering sits within Canva's Reliability Platform subgroup, part of the wider Infra supergroup responsible for the foundations Canva's engineering teams build on, including compute, storage, networking, developer experience and reliability. At more than 250 million monthly active users, Canva's hardest reliability problems increasingly span systems, teams and organisational boundaries. Production Engineering exists to help keep Canva reliable, efficient and predictable as that complexity grows. It's primarily a software engineering function. Rather than operating systems from the sidelines or papering over problems with process, Production Engineers solve operational challenges through design and code. The function is split into two teams: Embedded and Core. Embedded works directly alongside teams across Canva on targeted, long-running engineering engagements. Engineers typically work in small groups, bringing Production Engineering expertise directly into some of Canva's most important technical problem spaces. Core owns Production Engineering's services and works on broader, more federated problems that span multiple groups. Sometimes work discovered through an Embedded engagement comes back into Core, where the teams can work together to turn a targeted solution into capability that benefits more of Canva. Core is designed to operate as a larger, more focused team than the distributed Embedded model, with a smaller number of shared goals and a strong emphasis on engineering execution. Because Production Engineering is still taking shape, both teams are helping define what the function becomes: where it can have the greatest impact, how it partners with other teams, and how individual wins become lasting engineering capability across Canva. What’s in it for you? Achieving our crazy big goals motivates us to work hard — and we do — but you'll experience lots of moments of magic, connectivity and fun woven throughout life at Canva, too. We also offer a range of benefits to set you up for every success in and outside of work. Here's a taste of what's on offer: Equity packages — we want our success to be yours too Inclusive parental leave policy that supports all parents & carers An annual Vibe & Thrive allowance to support your wellbeing, social connection, office setup & more Flexible leave options that empower you to be a force for good, take time to recharge and support you personally Other stuff to know? We see AI as a powerful amplifier of creativity and technology at Canva. We're evolving how we assess AI skills in our Technology hiring experience — you'll tackle interactive, real-time challenges that reflect the kind of work we do. In some interviews, you may also be asked to solve a problem using an AI tool to show how you approach challenges with tech by your side. We make hiring decisions based on your experience, skills and passion, as well as how you can enhance Canva and our culture. When you apply, please tell us the pronouns you use and any reasonable adjustments you may need during the interview process. We celebrate all types of skills and backgrounds at Canva, so even if you don't feel like your skills quite match what's listed above — we still want to hear from you! Hey, g'day, mabuhay, kia ora, 你好, hallo, vítejte! Thanks for stopping by. We know job hunting can be a little time consuming and you're probably keen to find out what's on offer, so we'll get straight to the point. What you'd be doing in this role: This Engineering Manager role leads Embedded, one of Production Engineering's two teams. You'll lead a technically strong group of engineers, deliberately weighted toward senior talent, working simultaneously across several of Canva's most important production challenges. Right now, those engagements include safeguarding critical data, making software changes safer, building reliability and observability into a major platform rewrite, and building tooling and frameworks to allow services to increase resilience to overload scenarios. Because Embedded works alongside teams outside your reporting line, the role depends as much on influence as authority. You'll need to earn the trust of engineering leaders quickly, help your engineers navigate different technical and organisational environments, and stay close enough to the work to challenge assumptions and shape important technical decisions. Embedded is still new, so you won't be stepping into a finished playbook. You'll help decide which problems the team takes on, how engagements should work, what great looks like, and how we measure whether Production Engineering is having the impact we intended. You'll also be responsible for creating an environment where experienced engineers can do their best work: setting direction, building psychological safety, giving direct coaching and helping senior engineers grow their technical and organisational influence. Looking ahead, this role will help build: Impact where it matters most: Focus Embedded on the production problems where it can make the biggest difference, build trust with engineering leaders so the team is brought in early, and make that impact visible through measurable outcomes. A model that scales: Work out how Embedded can run more engagements without losing the technical bar, coaching quality or close partnerships that make the model effective. Standards worth reusing: Turn lessons from individual engagements into engineering practices, patterns and capabilities that can benefit teams across Canva. The next generation of leaders: Develop senior engineers and engagement leads who can coach others, lead increasingly complex work and multiply the team's impact. You’re probably a match: We'd love to hear from you if you fit one or more of these. You don't need to meet all of them, but the more the better and if you join the team, we're invested in helping you grow. Experience: Leading senior engineers: You've led highly experienced software engineers and technical leads through complex or ambiguous work, and know how to coach people operating with significant autonomy. Production exposure: You've worked in software environments where reliability, scalability and production risk genuinely mattered. Earned authority: You've built trust from a standing start, particularly in environments where influence mattered more than reporting lines. Cross-org delivery: You've led significant technical initiatives spanning multiple teams or groups, from understanding the problem through to delivering an outcome. Driving adoption: You've persuaded teams to change how they build or operate software, even when they were busy, skeptical or already had an established way of working. Engineering leadership: You can communicate complex technical trade-offs to senior stakeholders while creating an environment where engineers can challenge ideas, learn, receive direct feedback and do their best work. Technical knowledge: CS fundamentals: A strong grounding in computer science fundamentals, including concurrency, multithreading and data structures. Language depth: Enough depth in languages such as Go, Python, Java or C++ to engage meaningfully with designs, implementation choices and technical trade-offs. Systems knowledge: Strong working knowledge of system internals, networking and cloud platforms such as AWS or GCP. Systems thinking: Comfortable reasoning through ambiguous problems spanning multiple components, teams and constraints, with a strong understanding of system design, architecture and engineering patterns. Reliability engineering: Familiarity with observability, capacity, failure modes and the operational characteristics of production systems. Embedded is deliberately weighted toward senior technical talent. Scale and criticality: Experience working in large-scale or high-criticality environments where reliability failures have meaningful consequences for users, systems or the business. Please note that interviews are conducted virtually.
