About Customer.io Over 9,000 companies — from scrappy startups to global brands — use our platform to send billions of emails, push notifications, in-app messages, and SMS every day. Customer.io powers automated communication that people actually want to receive. We help teams send smarter, more relevant messages using real-time behavioral data. About the role Hi, my name is Michael, Head of Data & Analytics at Customer.io , and I'm looking for a Senior Data Scientist to help our teams make better decisions using customer and product data. You'll partner closely with Product, Marketing, and Customer Experience to evaluate product changes, design and analyze experiments, identify opportunities to improve the customer experience, and influence roadmap and business priorities. This is a hands-on role focused on analyzing behavior, building models, and turning data into clear, actionable direction. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys solving ambiguous problems, working closely with stakeholders, and applying data science pragmatically to support product and business decisions. We're looking for someone with an ownership mindset and a bias for action who balances technical rigor with practical decision-making. What we value Ownership: You take initiative and drive analytical work from concept to implementation. You don't wait for perfect requirements — you help define the problem and move the work forward. Curiosity: You naturally question assumptions and dig deeper into the "why" behind user behavior. You enjoy uncovering patterns in complex data and have the persistence to work through ambiguity and messy datasets. Analytical Rigor: You bring a thoughtful, structured approach to analytics and decision-making. You know how to define meaningful measures of success, evaluate changes with rigor, and distinguish signal from noise in complex behavioral data so teams can act with confidence. Communication: You can translate complex analytical concepts into clear recommendations for Product Managers, executives, and non-technical stakeholders. Collaboration: You work as a true cross-functional partner, balancing analytical rigor with practical business needs. You build trust by making data approachable, actionable, and reliable. What you'll do Analyze behavioral patterns across the customer lifecycle to identify trends, usage archetypes, and opportunities to improve adoption, engagement, and retention. Design experiments and measurement approaches to evaluate the impact of product and marketing changes - and help teams make decisions based on evidence rather than intuition. Build models and datasets that improve how teams segment customers, forecast outcomes, and identify trends. Apply machine learning and AI techniques where they solve practical problems, for both internal decision-making and customer-facing scenarios. Partner with Data Engineering to improve the quality, reliability, and accessibility of core data and metrics. Communicate findings clearly and directly so teams can make informed decisions without needing a statistics background. What we're looking for 5+ years of experience in a Data Science role within B2B SaaS or a similar product- or growth-focused environment. Strong foundation in statistics, experimentation, and behavioral analytics - with the ability to apply them pragmatically to real product and business problems. Proficiency in SQL and Python for large-scale analysis, modeling, and exploration. Experience with modern cloud data platforms (Snowflake, BigQuery, or similar); familiarity with dbt is a plus. Strong communication and stakeholder skills - you can explain complex analysis clearly to PMs, marketers, executives, and non-technical partners. An ownership mindset - you help define the problem and move work forward; you don't wait for perfect requirements. Why This Role This role offers the opportunity to work on high-impact problems across the business while helping shape how data science and analytics evolve within the organization. You'll have the autonomy to explore meaningful questions, influence strategy, and help build a stronger data-informed culture. Compensation & Benefits We believe in transparency. Staff Software Engineer, Product

Remotefull timeLead / StaffWorldwide (Remote)
Apply Now

Hi, I'm Paul, VP of Engineering at Customer.io . We're looking for a staff product engineer — not a generalist who happens to touch frontend and backend, but someone who thinks like a product owner and ships like an engineer. Under the hood: Go, React, and AI help us ship fast and scale with confidence. What We Value End-to-end ownership You take on the problems nobody's claimed — the ones that span squads with no obvious owner — and carry them from a fuzzy first conversation to what's actually live. If it touches the customer, it's yours to chase down. Comfort in ambiguity Half-formed problems and conflicting signals are your starting material, not a blocker. You define the problem before you solve it, form a point of view on what's worth building, and move without waiting for someone else to de-risk the call. Customer-first, always You think from the customer's problem backward, not the codebase forward. Every technical call traces back to what it does for the person on the other end of the message — and you can explain that connection to people who don't write code. Given the choice, you ship the thing that changes their experience, not the thing that's merely elegant. A healthy skepticism for "the way things are done" You retire practices that have outlived their usefulness, including ones you helped build. Best practices matter — but never more than forward motion. Force multiplication Shipping your part isn't the bar. You bring in the right people before a problem becomes theirs to clean up, and you leave enough behind — docs, patterns, delegation — that the team keeps moving without you in the room. What You'll Do Own important, ambiguous problems from initial framing through launch and iteration. Set direction, align partners, and stay accountable for the result. Partner with product, design, and data to shape priorities, scope the work, and define how success will be measured. Lead technical decisions across the stack, including architecture, performance, reliability, and maintainability. Lead work across teams and systems. Build alignment, resolve technical disagreements, and keep complex initiatives moving. Improve engineering practices through mentorship, reusable patterns, and clear technical guidance. Use AI throughout your engineering work, with sound judgment about where it helps, where it falls short, and how its output should be reviewed. Help the team improve by testing new workflows, sharing what works, and identifying useful opportunities for automation. Participate in an on-call rotation as required, supporting the systems the team builds. What we're looking for A track record of leading complex work across teams or systems and delivering meaningful customer, business, or engineering outcomes. Strong backend engineering experience, with the ability to work across the stack and lead end-to-end technical decisions. Strong product and technical judgment, especially when the problem or path forward is unclear. The ability to influence experienced peers and align teams without formal authority. Experience using metrics, experimentation, and observability to guide decisions and improve production systems. Regular, hands-on use of AI across the software development lifecycle, with the judgment to adapt as tools change while remaining accountable for quality, security, and outcomes. Experience improving how a broader team uses AI is a strong plus. Compensation & Benefits We believe in transparency. Starting salary for this role is $200,000 - $280,000 USD (or equivalent in local currency) depending on experience and subject to market rate adjustment. This role also carries a 10% annual bonus target. We know our people are what make us great, and we're committed to taking great care of them. Our inclusive benefits package supports your well-being and growth, including 100% coverage of medical, dental, vision, mental health, and supplemental insurance premiums for you and your family. Hiring Manager Interview (60 mins) - Talk with one of our hiring managers about your working style and a product you've owned end-to-end, plus a short AI-assisted coding exercise. System Design Interview (60 mins) - A collaborative conversation that moves between product tradeoffs and system design — how you'd scope something ambiguous and how you'd build it. Take-Home Assignment - Complete a short, realistic task similar to what you'd work on here. Assignment Review Call (60 mins) - Walk us through your work and discuss tradeoffs, priorities, and how you'd iterate. Staff Software Engineer, Backend

Hi, I'm Paul, VP of Engineering at Customer.io . We're looking for a staff engineer to set technical direction for the systems that move billions of messages a day. This isn't a role about shipping more, faster. It's about deciding what gets built, where the architecture needs to go next, and raising the ceiling for the engineers around you. Under the hood: Go, React, Ember and AI help us ship fast and scale with confidence. What We Value Ownership at company scale You take on the problems nobody has claimed yet — the ones that span squads, have no obvious owner, and would quietly cost us a year if left alone. You either solve them or get leadership aligned to. Engineers with product taste You think like a user, not just an engineer. You connect architectural decisions to what customers actually experience, and you can explain that connection to people who don't write Go. A healthy skepticism for "the way things are done" You retire practices that have outlived their usefulness, including ones you helped build. Best practices matter — but never more than forward motion. Force multiplication Your best quarter isn't measured by what you shipped. It's measured by what the department can now do that it couldn't before. What You'll Do Shape the technical direction of our distributed messaging systems in Go — making the high-level architectural calls on mission-critical services where scale, cost, and reliability are all in tension Take on ambiguous, high-stakes problems that cross squad and function boundaries, and drive them to a decision when the right answer isn't obvious to anyone yet Build consensus on contested technical questions across teams, and communicate the tradeoffs clearly enough that senior leadership can act on them Raise the department's bar — set quality and design standards, mentor senior engineers, and turn what you know into frameworks and documentation other teams can use without you in the room Drive engineering process and tooling improvements that span multiple squads, not just your own Participate in an on-call rotation as required, supporting the reliability of the systems you build Interview and calibrate against our career ladder, giving honest, evidence-based assessments of candidates Use AI agents to make multi-file changes by scoping the work, writing the prompt, and verifying the output What we're looking for 10+ years building scalable, distributed systems in Go (or similar statically typed languages), including several as the person others turned to on architecture Depth across multiple systems or domains, not just one — you've been the recognized expert in more than one place A track record of designing for production reality: you quantify tradeoffs in throughput, cost, and reliability rather than picking a reasonable path and defending it Experience designing observability and recovery as first-class concerns — metrics, alerting, rollback, backpressure, checkpointing — not logging added afterward Comfort working in cloud-native environments (AWS, GCP), with relational databases (we use MySQL) and a real understanding of performance tradeoffs Evidence of making other engineers better: mentorship, technical writing, design review, standards that outlasted your involvement A bias for action over perfection, and the judgment to know which decisions are worth slowing down for Compensation & Benefits We believe in transparency. Starting salary for this role is $200,000 - $240,000 USD (or equivalent in local currency) depending on experience and subject to market rate adjustment. This role also carries a 10% annual bonus target. We know our people are what make us great, and we're committed to taking great care of them. Hi, I'm Paul, VP of Engineering at Customer.io . We're always looking for thoughtful, driven Engineering Managers to add to our org. Some of our teams are building customer-facing product and workflows; others keep our distributed systems reliable, observable, and ready to scale. Whichever kind of problem energizes you, if you lead people well, hold a high technical bar, and drive work to completion without waiting to be handed a plan, we want to hear from you. About Customer.io Over 9,000 companies—from scrappy startups to global brands—use our platform to send billions of emails, push notifications, in-app messages, and SMS every day. Customer.io powers automated communication that people actually want to receive. We help teams send smarter, more relevant messages using real-time behavioral data—what people do or don't do inside a web or mobile app. Under the hood: Go, React, and AI help us ship fast and scale with confidence. What we value Ownership. You set direction and see initiatives through. You create clarity when things are murky and set the path forward rather than waiting for one to be defined, and you're motivated by impact—not just intention. You hold yourself and your team accountable to shipping, not just staying busy. Leaders who can do both. You operate at the strategic level and stay close to the technical work. You can align stakeholders on a plan and earn your engineers' respect in the same day—you don't choose between vision and execution, you hold both. A drive to execute through resistance. Competing priorities, skeptical stakeholders, tired teams—you've moved work forward anyway. You name the resistance, make the call, and own the milestones and the misses. An AI-first mindset. AI is central to how you build and how you lead your team to build. You have a real, concrete point of view on AI-native development, you use agentic tooling yourself, and you bring it into how your squad operates. A healthy skepticism for "the way things are done." You bring rigor and pragmatism. Best practices matter—but never more than forward motion. You know when to build, when to buy, and when to wait—and you're comfortable making the call with incomplete information, then adjusting as you learn. What you'll do Care deeply about our customers and their outcomes Lead your squad to deliver real customer value by owning projects end to end—from planning through delivery, quality, and follow-through Drive execution: set milestones, keep work moving through ambiguity and competing priorities, and ship in small, observable increments rather than waiting for a release window Make confident decisions when the path isn't obvious, and lead your team through them Set the operating rhythm that helps your team move fastest, rather than defaulting to ceremony for its own sake Ensure your squad's solutions are scalable, architecturally sound, flexible, and secure, with strong peer-review, QA, documentation, deployment, logging, and monitoring practices Stay close to the work—jump into design reviews, architecture calls, and incidents rather than watching from a distance Provide direct, timely, and specific coaching, and create meaningful development opportunities for your direct reports Participate in an on-call rotation as required, supporting the reliability of the systems you build Hire, onboard, and manage performance so the right people are in place to hit your squad's goals Bring an AI-native perspective—use AI tools to accelerate the team's velocity and help everyone prototype faster and ship smarter Partner across engineering and other departments to align efforts with customer success, and reach higher when our customers are having a bad day What we're looking for 3+ years managing engineers at a SaaS company (B2B or B2C), ideally early-to-mid-stage A track record of driving execution—concrete delivery outcomes with milestones, dates, and "I drove" ownership, especially in complex or fast-moving environments A strong technical background—you can hold your own in architecture conversations and design reviews, represent your squad's technical choices across the company, and you've shipped real work recently enough to stay credible Comfort operating with high autonomy and little prescribed structure—you create your own clarity and make difficult tradeoffs between competing priorities Demonstrated AI-native leadership—not just personal fluency, but bringing AI-first practices into how your team builds Experience building high-performing, inclusive, and collaborative teams Clear, concise, and direct communication, both verbal and written Compensation & Benefits We believe in transparency. Starting salary for this role is $185,000-$215,000 USD (or equivalent in local currency) depending on experience and subject to market rate adjustment. We know our people are what make us great, and we're committed to taking great care of them. Hi, I'm Manu, Engineering Manager at Customer.io . We're looking for experienced backend engineers who want to build and own the infrastructure that powers one of the most data-intensive platforms in marketing automation — systems that process millions of events per second, orchestrate complex workflows at scale, and keep everything running reliably for thousands of customers worldwide. You'll work on the Platform team, tackling hard distributed systems problems: designing for fault tolerance, scaling services under real production pressure, and building the foundational layers that every other team at Customer.io depends on. What you'll bring: Deep experience with distributed systems and large-scale backend architecture Strong instincts around reliability, observability, and fault tolerance Comfort reasoning about performance, capacity, and trade-offs at scale Experience with event-driven systems, message queues, or data pipelines is a plus A collaborative mindset — you raise the team around you About Customer.io Over 9,000 companies - from scrappy startups to global brands - use our platform to send billions of emails, push notifications, in-app messages, and SMS every day. Customer.io powers automated communication that people actually want to receive. We help teams send smarter, more relevant messages using real-time behavioral data. Under the hood: Go, React, Ember and AI help us ship fast and scale with confidence. What We Value Ownership You drive technical direction across systems and teams. Engineers with customer focus You think about how infrastructure unlocks customer value. You care about developer experience, system design, and how your work shapes the customer experience. A healthy disregard for “the way things are done” You bring rigor and creativity. Best practices matter, but never more than forward motion. What You’ll Do Design and evolve distributed systems in Go to handle billions of daily events and messages and store and index petabytes of data Lead architectural decisions around performance, reliability, and real-time event processing Improve service-to-service communication through better APIs, messaging systems, and event-driven patterns Work across teams to uncover bottlenecks and system issues, and lead initiatives to resolve them for a smoother customer experience Tackle high-throughput challenges across data pipelines, queues, and scheduling infrastructure Able to debug production systems at scale using effective instrumentation, and resolve issues quickly and confidently Participate in an on-call rotation as required, supporting the reliability of the systems you build Share knowledge and raise the bar through sharing your progress publicly with short videos, thoughtful writing, and mentorship Leverage AI tools to prototype, move faster, and make better decisions What we're looking for Significant experience (typically 10+ years) building scalable, distributed systems in Go (or similar statically typed languages) Deep experience with databases - relational (MySQL, Postgres) and non-relational (DynamoDB, BigTable) - and how to make them fast Comfort working in cloud-native environments (AWS, GCP) Familiarity with APIs, observability, and operating production systems A bias for action over perfection, and pride in owning technical decisions Compensation & Benefits We believe in transparency. Starting salary for this role is $150,000 - $200,000 USD (or equivalent in local currency) depending on experience and subject to market rate adjustment. We know our people are what make us great, and we’re committed to taking great care of them. Our inclusive benefits package supports your well-being and growth, including 100% coverage of medical, dental, vision, mental health, and supplemental insurance premiums for you and your family. Hiring Manager Interview (60 mins) - Talk with one of our hiring managers about your working style and a project you've owned end-to-end, plus a short AI-assisted coding exercise. System Design Interview (60 mins) - Design a system end-to-end. We're looking for how you think, communicate tradeoffs, and drive through ambiguity. Take-Home Assignment - Complete a short, realistic task similar to what you’d work on here. Assignment Review Calls (2 x 60 mins) - Walk us through your work and discuss tradeoffs, priorities, and how you’d iterate. All final candidates will be asked to complete a background check and employment verifications as part of our pre-employment process. We strive to build an inclusive team culture, implement bias-free hiring practices, and develop community partnerships to expand our global impact. Zoom is the only video conference platform that we use, virtual interviews will be conducted using the video capability (i.e., not via the chat), and offers will be extended in writing on official Customer.io letterhead. Senior Software Engineer - Email Channel

Remotefull timeSeniorWorldwide (Remote)
Apply Now

Hi, I'm Brian, Senior Director of Engineering at Customer.io. We're looking for experienced engineers who want to own a channel end to end — from the infrastructure that delivers billions of messages reliably, to the product surfaces our customers use to build, send, and analyze their campaigns. You'll work across the stack, bringing both systems thinking and product craft to one of the most technically rich problem spaces in the industry. You don't need email experience to apply. We can teach you the email domain. The engineers who thrive here are the ones who love learning a deep problem space, not only the ones who arrive already knowing it. Under the hood: Go, React, Ember and AI help us ship fast and scale with confidence. What We Value Ownership You own problems end to end. You move fast, act like an owner, and thrive in ambiguity. You've led complex projects before, whether officially or not, and you're ready to do it again. Engineers with product taste You think like a user, not just an engineer. You care how your systems power real customer value — and how to make them better. A healthy skepticism for "the way things are done" You bring rigor and creativity. Best practices matter — but never more than forward motion. What You'll Do Build and evolve the frontend experiences customers use to create, preview, and analyze campaigns — editors, configuration, and analytics dashboards Design and scale backend systems that process high volumes of messages and events: queue management, retry logic, rate limiting, and real-time event pipelines Build automated systems that respond intelligently to feedback signals from external providers — classification, suppression, throttling, and health scoring Partner with in-house domain experts to turn their knowledge into automated tooling — you bring the systems skills, they bring the email depth Instrument and monitor channel health end to end: signal detection, anomaly alerting, and observability Own problems end to end — from architecture and schema design to testing, deployment, and monitoring Participate in an on-call rotation as required, supporting the reliability of the systems you build Share knowledge and raise the bar through short videos, thoughtful writing, and mentorship Use AI agents to make multi-file changes by scoping the work, writing the prompt, and verifying the output What We're Looking For 7+ years of experience building scalable, distributed systems in Go (or similar statically typed languages) Experience building product-facing frontend features in React or similar frameworks, with attention to UX quality and polish Experience building or consuming APIs that handle high-throughput async workloads — event streams, queues, and systems that degrade gracefully under load Comfort integrating with external systems you don't control — third-party APIs, rate limits, opaque failure modes — and designing for resilience around them Comfort working in cloud-native environments (AWS, GCP) Familiarity with relational databases (we use MySQL primarily) and an understanding of performance tradeoffs Experience with observability tooling and operating production systems A bias for action over perfection, and pride in owning technical decisions Nice to have: Familiarity with email infrastructure — deliverability, authentication standards (SPF/DKIM/DMARC), sender reputation, or high-volume sending Compensation & Benefits We believe in transparency. Starting salary for this role is $150,000 - $200,000 USD (or equivalent in local currency) depending on experience and subject to market rate adjustment. We know our people are what make us great, and we're committed to taking great care of them. Project Deep Dive (60 minutes: A focused conversation on a technical project you've owned end-to-end, and how you balance planned work against urgent, customer-impacting issues.
