Introducing Machine Learning & AI at Trainline 👋 Machine learning and AI are at the core of how Trainline is transforming travel, helping millions of customers make smarter, more sustainable journeys every day. Our ML models and AI solutions power critical aspects of our platform, including advanced search and recommendations across our mobile and web applications, pricing and routing optimisation, personalised experiences enhanced by agentic AI, data-driven marketing systems, and AI agents that improve customer support. Our machine learning teams own the complete delivery lifecycle from ideation to production, working closely with stakeholders across the business to expand the understanding and impact of machine learning and AI throughout Trainline. We are looking for a Junior Machine Learning Engineer to join a high-performing, deeply technical community of Machine Learning Engineers, Data Scientists and Data Engineers who tackle complex problems by combining Trainline's rich datasets with cutting-edge algorithms. Introducing the Trainline Data Science & Analytics Team 👋 Data Science & Analytics (DSA) sits at the heart of how Trainline understands and improves the end-to-end customer journey, from finding a journey through to booking. Our data scientists and analysts work closely together to support supply, search and commerce, spotting patterns that affect the customer experience, identifying opportunities for our customers and our business, and building solutions that make life easier for the wider team. This role offers the chance to work across multiple areas of the business rather than being confined to a single specialism, giving you real breadth and the opportunity to see how different parts of the customer journey connect. As a Senior Data Scientist, you will take ownership of investigations and solutions that span search, supply and commerce, working with detailed datasets and linking data sources to support projects across pillars. You will collaborate closely with all teams responsible for core customer experiences (from Data, Product, Engineering, Commercial), own problems and their solution end to end, challenge the status quo and help shape how the wider team approaches recurring problems and opportunities. In this role as the Senior Data Scientist, you will... 🚄 Work across search, supply and commerce, bringing together diverse datasets to tackle complex problems and deliver projects that span multiple pillars. Identify opportunities for our customers and our business, using data to shape solutions and building tools and approaches that make the wider team more effective. Develop a deep understanding of the customer experience, getting to the root causes of recurring problems (such as conversion declines, checkout errors or searches returning no results) and working cross-functionally to turn insights into lasting improvements. Drive continuous improvement by identifying recurring patterns and turning what you learn into reusable tools, frameworks and solutions that reduce investigation time and help the wider team move faster. Surface product and commercial opportunities through your analysis, connecting insights to business context and bringing opportunities to the right teams timely to drive action. We'd love to hear from you if you have... 🔎 Substantial experience as a Data Scientist at a senior level, with the confidence, judgement and autonomy that come from having operated at this level before. Track record of owning a business or functional area end to end, taking responsibility for identifying opportunities, shaping the analytical approach and driving outcomes - not just delivering analysis. Experience working across multiple business areas or domains, navigating competing priorities and adapting your approach to different problems, stakeholders and contexts. A strong track record of delivering measurable business impact through product analytics, translating data and insights into decisions and actions that improve customer and business outcomes. Strong SQL and Python skills, used confidently to explore, analyse and draw actionable insights from complex datasets, alongside good engineering practices such as version control and effective use of AI tools to work more efficiently. Confidence working with large, unfamiliar and diverse datasets, bringing together multiple data sources to build a robust and comprehensive understanding of a problem. Experience mentoring and supporting other Data Scientists, helping colleagues develop their technical skills, analytical thinking and approach to problem-solving. Introducing the Embedded Data Engineering in ML Team 👋 At the heart of our Data and ML teams, embedded Data Engineers create the pipelines and tables that power business critical dashboards, enable self-service analytics, and fuel advanced machine learning models and real-time data products. Working with tools like DBT, Spark, and Airflow, you'll transform high volume raw event data into user-friendly, high impact datasets that support machine learning use cases across the business. As an Embedded Data Engineer in ML, you'll sit within the Machine Learning team, working day to day with Machine Learning Engineers and Data Scientists to build reliable datasets for ML use cases. You'll also have access to Trainline's wider Data Engineering, Data Platform, and analytics community, working alongside other embedded Data Engineers in ML, including senior and principal engineers. Deploy and maintain cloud-native data applications on AWS, using CI/CD pipelines to automate builds, testing, and releases. Maintain the technical quality, performance, and reliability of production data pipelines through strong observability and engineering best practices. Collaborate closely with Machine Learning Engineers and Data Scientists to build reliable, well-structured datasets that power ML use cases. Experience building data pipelines for downstream machine learning workloads, including feature engineering and model training workflows. Comfort with data modelling and building efficient data marts and warehouses in the cloud. Experience building data pipelines using tools such as Spark and Airflow, or similar technologies, within a cloud environment such as AWS. Familiarity with both real-time and batch data workloads, along with modern data transformation and orchestration patterns. Ideally, you may also have experience with parallel or distributed training frameworks such as Ray, or with modern data formats such as Parquet and Iceberg. It would also be helpful if you have some experience with Infrastructure as Code (Terraform) and containerisation (Docker) to support automated, standardised deployments. You may also have contributed to or maintained CI/CD pipelines (such as Jenkins or GitHub Actions) as part of production grade data systems, and enjoy solving complex data problems collaboratively.
