Build a Safer World. TRM Labs provides AI-powered intelligence solutions that help public and private sector agencies investigate and disrupt crime. TRM's platforms enable investigators to trace illicit activity, build cases, and construct operating pictures of threat networks. Leading agencies and businesses worldwide rely on TRM to make the world safer and more secure. The Data Platform team builds and owns highly available, scalable data infrastructure for TRM's products and services. As a Senior Software Engineer on Data Infrastructure (RDBMS), you will develop, operate, and scale the relational database systems that serve data at petabyte scale, helping build a safer financial system for billions of people. This role is uniquely broad at TRM: you own the serving layer end to end, from query performance to cost to availability, on infrastructure that product teams depend on every day. The impact you will have: Keep customer-facing APIs fast and available at five-nines by owning query tuning, index design, and schema optimization on petabyte-scale Postgres/Citus, directly determining whether product teams can serve data in real time Cut storage and compute costs materially by using AI-assisted analysis (pganalyze paired with Claude) to detect compression and data-model opportunities, then shipping validated changes to production Remove team toil by building agentic automation for routine database operations, such as self-serve pgbouncer provisioning, disk scaling, and blue-green deployments, so any engineer can run them safely Protect data integrity and latency by driving agentic validation of database changes before they reach production Keep real-time data flowing by managing CDC pipelines (PeerDB, Fivetran, Debezium) and using AI tooling to debug replication failures faster Shape the next-generation platform by migrating workloads off first-gen infrastructure and prototyping new data stores with AI-accelerated spikes Raise the whole team's leverage by codifying your workflows into AI-native runbooks and internal tooling that teammates reuse What we're looking for: 5–8 years building and operating production PostgreSQL (Citus, Aurora, AlloyDB, or equivalent distributed Postgres) Deep SQL optimization skills (Explain Plans, CTEs, window functions, partitioning, index design, query-planner behavior in distributed environments), increasingly paired with AI-assisted query analysis Hands-on experience with CDC tools (PeerDB, Fivetran, Debezium, Datastream, Airbyte) and comfort using AI tooling to debug replication failure modes Fluency with database profiling (pganalyze or equivalent) to interpret metrics and logs, including using LLMs to summarize performance findings Production automation experience in Python or Go, including agentic automation of routine database tasks; Postgres extension development is a plus Daily use of AI coding tools (Claude, Copilot) to accelerate development and produce higher-quality output faster, with the judgment to know when to trust or reject AI output A track record of using AI-assisted analysis to drive measurable cost or performance improvements in production database systems About the Team: The Data Platform team is distributed, not distant. We operate async-first across US and Canada working hours with intentional synchronous touchpoints when speed demands it We own the petabyte-scale data infrastructure that powers TRM's products. The scope is large, the mission is real, and the work is technically demanding Team culture is product-focused, customer-focused, coaching-oriented, scrappy when needed, and process-oriented when executing against OKRs You will work alongside senior engineers who care deeply about their craft and hold high standards for code quality, operational excellence, and cross-team communication Team Operating Rhythms: Distributed, not distant: most collaboration happens async in Slack, Notion, and GitHub, and meetings are purposeful and minimal Primary timezone overlap across US and Canada working hours; our north star is no IC spending more than 3–4 hours per week in meetings Written-first culture: technical specs and decision docs drive alignment before code On Call Requirements: ⚠️ On Call Requirements — Pending Regional Compliance Review. This role carries an on-call rotation (approximately once every 15 days; each shift is a 24-hour window across 2 days). On-call is clear to proceed for United States; the Canada portion requires People Ops / Deel provincial confirmation before this section is finalized and posted. See the On-Call Compliance note in the Post-Fill Summary. Learn about TRM Speed in this position: Within 30 days, eliminate a single point of failure by shipping self-serve scaling automation (pgbouncer provisioning, disk resizing) that any teammate can run, freeing senior engineering time Within the first quarter, identify a compression opportunity with AI-assisted analysis, validate it with a proof of concept, and ship it to production for a measurable storage-cost reduction with zero availability impact Within 90 days, coordinate a schema change across three product-engineering teams in parallel and deliver the platform changes ahead of a product deadline so a customer feature ships on time The following represents the expected range of compensation for this role: Individual pay is determined by skills, qualifications, experience, and location. The compensation details listed in this posting reflect the US base salary only. The estimated base salary range for this role is $200,000 - $220,000 Additionally, this role may be eligible to participate in TRM’s equity plan. Please note – we factor in the different costs for geographies outside the United States. Application Instructions If you’re interested in joining TRM, we encourage you to apply directly. Every application is reviewed by our Talent team. Before applying, review the job description carefully and highlight the experience and impact that best demonstrate the required qualifications. Please also provide thoughtful and accurate answers to the application questions, as these will be used to evaluate your qualifications for the role. If you send your resume directly to someone at TRM, we can’t guarantee it will reach the appropriate hiring team. Applying directly is the best way to ensure you’re considered. Learn about TRM Speed in this position: The team received a request from customers to show the running balance for assets tied to an address within the product. They brainstormed to determine the minimal viable solution that could be delivered within two weeks. The team decided to develop a framework that would facilitate enabling this feature for each chain (such as BTC, ETH, etc.) individually. They successfully implemented and tested this solution for the BTC chain and delivered it to customers within the two-week timeframe. This approach allowed the team to quickly provide value to customers and establish a repeatable process. The team was tasked with implementing a new feature that would enable TRM to gather feedback from the user community swiftly. Due to the company's goal of showcasing the feature at an upcoming event, the timeline was tight. The team quickly adjusted to the request, assessed the requirements, and developed a solution that addressed 80% of the needs and could be executed within a very short timeframe. They successfully delivered the feature on schedule, impressing customers with both the functionality and the speed of execution. The team was tasked with developing a solution to reveal Indirect Exposure through cross-chain swaps in response to a competitor's similar feature. Before choosing the technical approach, the team consulted with stakeholders to establish a feasible timeline for the implementation. With this input, the team devised a solution that fit the timeline, communicated the tradeoffs to stakeholders, and successfully delivered the solution as promised. TRM's Intel team runs at the intersection of intelligence analysts, back-end systems, and AI. This role sits at that intersection. Its mandate is to make TRM's intelligence collection meaningfully better with AI . You'll work directly alongside our intel analysts to understand how they collect and act on intelligence, then build the AI-powered products, tooling, and infrastructure that let them do it faster and at greater scale. We're looking for a senior engineer with genuine product sense, someone who can sit with a semi-technical analyst, see past the surface-level request, and identify the highest-impact, scalable thing to build. The failure mode we're explicitly hiring against is an engineer who rapidly ships a pile of narrow automations that pick at minor annoyances but don't move the needle. We want sticky, real products that advance the mission. This is a hands-on role for someone who wants to stay deeply technical while also shaping what gets built, not just how . The impact you’ll have here: Embed directly with our intel analysts to deeply understand their goals, constraints, and workflows, then translate those into technical solutions with clear success criteria. Identify the highest-leverage opportunities to improve intelligence collection — bringing a product lens to prioritization, not just an engineering one — and productize your work so it's adopted and durable. Design, build, and own AI-powered internal applications end-to-end: back-end services, APIs, data storage, the back-end infrastructure they run on, and user-facing interfaces. Develop custom agentic solutions leveraging state-of-the-art models (e.g., OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini) to augment and scale intelligence workflows. Own projects end-to-end — technical design, architecture, scoping, delivery, iteration, and ongoing support. Build reliable, scalable systems on which analysts depend day to day. Continuously evaluate impact and iterate based on real outcomes for the Intel team. What we’re looking for: 6+ years full-stack software engineering experience building scalable web applications, services, and APIs Strong product sense — the ability to zoom out, spot the highest-impact and most scalable solution, and ship it as something people actually keep using. This is the bar-raising skill for this role. Proficiency in Python and/or JavaScript/TypeScript, with strong back-end and systems engineering skills. Experience building backend systems, working with various datastores such as (Postgres/pgvector, Pinecone, Redis) and designing APIs. Demonstrated curiosity and hands-on experience with AI tools and applications - using modern AI models, agentic IDEs, or building AI-enabled workflows or prototypes. A high degree of ownership and initiative, with the ability to operate independently in ambiguous problem spaces Strong communication and the ability to build trust with semi-technical stakeholders (our analysts) and explain technical trade-offs clearly. We're deliberately open on background: a strong back-end/systems engineer and a strong data/ML-leaning engineer can both thrive here. Seniority, sharpness, drive, and product sense matter more than a specific profile. About the Team: The team operates on a weekly sprint schedule. Individuals on the team are tasked to lead projects as technical anchors, and given a chance to grow and take ownership according to their level and goals. We work closely with our internal stakeholders to deliver impactful features to our internal customers and the company. In this role, the internal tools engineer is responsible for triaging customer support requests from specific Slack channels pertaining to internal tools. About TRM's Engineering Levels: Engineer: Responsible for helping to define project milestones and executing small decision decisions independently with the appropriate tradeoffs between simplicity, readability, and performance. Provides mentorship to junior engineers, and enhances operational excellence through tech debt reduction and knowledge sharing. Senior Software Engineer, AI Engineer

The team’s culture is built on psychological safety wherein team members build rapport and trust-based relationships with teammates, hold each other accountable and to a high bar, collaborate extensively, and have lots of fun along the way. The team’s timezone is a mix of EST and PST with at least 6 hours of overlap with PST (8 am to 2 pm PST) On-Call: We have an on-call rotation that is specific to internal tools. Senior Engineer: Successfully designs and documents system improvements and features for an OKR/project from the ground up. Consistently delivers efficient and reusable systems, optimizes team throughput with appropriate tradeoffs, mentors team members, and enhances cross-team collaboration through documentation and knowledge sharing. Staff Engineer: Drives scoping and execution of one or more OKRs/projects that impact multiple teams. Partners with stakeholders to set the team vision and technical roadmaps for one or more products. Is a role model and mentor to the entire engineering organization. Ensures system health and quality with operational reviews, testing strategies, and monitoring rigor. The following represents the expected range of compensation for this role: Individual pay is determined by skills, qualifications, experience, and location.
