About Us At Cloudflare, we are on a mission to help build a better Internet. Today the company runs one of the world’s largest networks that powers millions of websites and other Internet properties for customers ranging from individual bloggers to SMBs to Fortune 500 companies. Cloudflare protects and accelerates any Internet application online without adding hardware, installing software, or changing a line of code. Internet properties powered by Cloudflare all have web traffic routed through its intelligent global network, which gets smarter with every request. As a result, they see significant improvement in performance and a decrease in spam and other attacks. Cloudflare was named to Entrepreneur Magazine’s Top Company Cultures list and ranked among the World’s Most Innovative Companies by Fast Company. At Cloudflare, we’re not looking for people who wait for a polished roadmap; we’re looking for the builders who see the cracks in the Internet that everyone else has simply learned to live with. We value candidates who have the instinct to spot a "normalized" problem and the AI-native curiosity to create a solution using the latest tools. Our culture is built on iteration, leveraging AI to ship faster today to make it better tomorrow, while ensuring that every improvement, no matter how small, is shared across the team to lift everyone up. If you’re the type of person who values curiosity over bureaucracy, and that AI is a partner in solving tough problems to keep the Internet moving forward, you’ll fit right in. Available Locations: Austin, TX About the Department Cloudflare's Enterprise Integrations Engineering Team designs, builds, and maintains integrations across the SaaS applications used throughout the organization. We're increasingly applying AI, from agentic workflows to LLM-assisted development and automated diagnostics, to build integrations faster, operate them more reliably, and reduce manual toil across the team. Our mission is to create scalable, reliable, and intelligent systems that ensure data flows securely and efficiently between platforms, and to use AI as a force multiplier for how we design, build, and support that work. Our team is highly collaborative, values continuous learning, and supports each other through shared ownership and open communication. We work closely with both technical and business teams, conduct regular retrospectives, and are actively evolving how AI tooling changes the way we plan, build, test, and troubleshoot integrations. What You’ll Do We’re looking for a Principal Engineer to establish technical direction across Enterprise Applications and help teams turn that direction into reliable, incremental delivery. You’ll design systems, lead complex cross-team initiatives, influence engineering practices, and remain hands-on with implementation where your contribution has the greatest leverage. This role requires navigating ambiguity, adapting technical strategy as conditions change, and building alignment across engineering and business stakeholders. You’ll model responsible AI-assisted engineering, operational excellence, sound judgment, and attention to detail. Responsibilities include: Establish and communicate technical strategy across multiple teams, translating long-term direction into incremental delivery plans. Lead complex, cross-functional initiatives from problem definition through architecture, implementation, deployment, and operation. Influence technical decisions across teams through design reviews, prototypes, standards, mentoring, and hands-on contributions. Build and extend AI-enabled systems, including agents, evaluation frameworks, MCP servers, and workflow automation. Determine when AI is appropriate and when deterministic software offers a safer, simpler, or more reliable solution. Establish practices for evaluating AI systems, including quality, reliability, security, cost, latency, and human oversight. Improve engineering effectiveness through reusable platforms, operational tooling, automated diagnostics, and development workflows. Partner with business and technical stakeholders to convert ambiguous problems into clear technical strategies and measurable outcomes. Desirable Skills, Knowledge, and Experience: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent work experience 10+ years of professional software engineering experience as a guideline Proficiency in at least one backend language. Experience with LLM APIs (Anthropic, OpenAI, etc.) Experience with AI guardrails/governance best practices Demonstrated experience delivering AI-enabled systems beyond experimentation. Candidates should be able to explain their individual contribution, evaluation approach, production constraints, failure modes, and measurable outcomes. Demonstrated experience influencing technical culture and best practices without authority. Familiarity with integration patterns (pub/sub, API-first, CDM, batch processing) Experience working with stakeholders to solve business problems through integration or automation solutions Experience building APIs with proper security and operational practices Experience with observability tooling (e.g. Grafana, Prometheus, Sentry, Kibana, Splunk or similar) Working familiarity with containerized/cloud environments (Kubernetes, or equivalent cloud-native experience) Experience with serverless computing platforms (e.g. AWS Lambda, Google Cloud Functions, Azure Functions, or Cloudflare Workers) Experience with GitLab or other CI/CD tooling Willingness to participate in an on-call rotation for roughly one week every two months Bonus Points: Experience with business financial systems, such as Oracle or NetSuite Experience with PostgreSQL Experience with Cloudflare Developer Platform (Workers, Workflows, D1, etc.) Experience with Go, Python and TypeScript Compensation Compensation may be adjusted depending on work location. You will report directly to the Director of Developer GTM, APJC. What You’ll Do Shape Strategy: Guide the technical strategy for strategic Developer Platform customers and partners across the region. Design & Translate: Transform complex business, application, security, and operational requirements into secure, scalable, and highly maintainable architectures on Cloudflare. Collaborate & Advise: Partner with engineering executives and senior stakeholders to advise on application modernization, distributed systems, AI architecture, and platform strategy. Facilitate Discovery: Lead architecture discovery sessions, technical workshops, proofs of concept, design reviews, and production-readiness discussions in a supportive, consultative manner. Stay Hands-On: Build, review, and troubleshoot representative applications and integrations to stay deeply connected to the technology. Champion the Region: Serve as a Principal technical leader through presentations, public speaking, written guidance, and internal enablement. Mentor & Grow: Support, develop, and mentor solutions architects and technical colleagues navigating complex customer engagements. Bridge Teams: Build effective, continuous feedback loops between customers, field teams, and product leaders, translating regional needs into actionable product and go-to-market recommendations. What Success Looks Like By the end of your first year, you will have: Become a trusted technical advisor and collaborative partner to strategic customers, partners, and internal leaders. Established clear, actionable technical strategies and adoption plans for priority engagements. Successfully partnered with customers to validate and launch their production workloads on Cloudflare. Published reusable reference architectures and field guidance that elevate the entire team. Empowered the field organization’s ability to position, architect, and deliver Cloudflare’s developer and AI solutions. Cultivated the technical leadership of your colleagues through active mentorship and enablement. Provided product teams with consistent, evidence-based insights into regional customer requirements and adoption barriers. Become recognized as a supportive, authoritative Principal Developer Platform architect across APJC. What We’re Looking For Meaningful Experience: A strong background in solutions architecture, software engineering, technical consulting, or a related customer-facing technical role. While candidates at the Principal level often bring 15+ years of experience, we care most about your demonstrated scope, impact, and ability to navigate complex architectural challenges. Language Skills: Professional fluency in English and Mandarin Chinese, with the ability to comfortably lead technical and executive discussions in both languages to support clients in the Greater China region, which form a significant part of your portfolio. Strategic Collaboration: A track record of guiding complex technical strategies involving developers, infrastructure teams, security stakeholders, and senior executives. Technical Depth: Deep working knowledge of distributed application architecture (compute, storage, networking, security, reliability, and observability). Hands-On Capability: Software-development experience, including the ability to build or review production-quality applications and proofs of concept (preferably in JavaScript or TypeScript). Ecosystem Knowledge: A strong understanding of modern web technologies, serverless/cloud-native architectures, modern software-delivery practices, and at least one major public cloud platform. Influential Leadership: A proven ability to influence without direct authority, thoughtfully mentor colleagues, and turn individual solutions into shared organizational capabilities. Communication: Excellent written, presentation, and facilitation skills tailored for developer, architectural, and executive audiences. Travel: Ability to travel up to 30%, primarily within APJC and mainland China (supported by flexible planning). Nice-to-Have (Bonus Skills) Experience building and operating production applications on Cloudflare’s Developer Platform. Experience designing AI inference, agentic, retrieval-augmented generation, or data-intensive applications. Familiarity with customers, technology partners, or developer communities in Greater China. A background in public speaking, technical writing, open-source contribution, or community leadership. Relevant cloud or architecture certifications. A degree in computer science, engineering, or a related discipline, OR equivalent practical experience. Important Note: At Cloudflare, we know that great candidates come from diverse backgrounds with non-linear paths. You don’t need to tick every single box to be right for this role. Responsibilities Implement AI Security Solutions: Identify process bottlenecks and build AI-driven tools or scripts to help automate code analysis, optimize triage, and streamline Product Security workflows. Security Reviews & Threat Modeling: Conduct structured security reviews and threat modeling sessions (e.g., STRIDE) across product features, defining security requirements early in the development lifecycle. Product Vulnerability Management: Manage the operational lifecycle of product security findings. Ensure vulnerabilities are verified, mapped to the correct engineering owner, and tracked to mitigation in alignment with established SLAs. Bug Bounty Triage: Perform the technical triage and validation of Cloudflare’s external Bug Bounty submissions, verifying exploitability and evaluating business risk. Pentest Coordination: Support internal and external penetration testing engagements by reviewing findings, clarifying technical context, and assisting development teams with remediation strategies. Engineering Collaboration: Partner closely with DevOps and product teams, acting as a reliable security point of contact and helping developers implement secure coding practices. Desirable Skills, Knowledge, and Experience Product/AppSec Expertise: 5+ years of experience in Product or Application Security within large-scale distributed cloud environments or SaaS platforms. Practical AI & Automation Engineering: Demonstrated ability to build production-grade automation scripts and tools. Must possess hands-on engineering experience leveraging AI/LLMs to solve operational or technical challenges. Vulnerability Lifecycle Operations: Experience tracking, routing, and driving the remediation of software vulnerabilities across engineering groups while working against defined SLAs. Strong Collaboration & Communication: Ability to collaborate effectively across teams, clearly communicating technical security risks to software engineers and resolving ownership ambiguity constructively. Bonus points Offensive Security Tooling: Familiarity with modern exploitation techniques, fuzzing frameworks, or automated scanning utilities. Program Management Experience: Experience scaling crowdsourced security programs (e.g., HackerOne, Bugcrowd) or optimizing agile project management workflows within JIRA. Experience in integrating hardware security features into production code bases Equity This role is eligible to participate in Cloudflare’s equity plan. Available Locations: Lisbon, Portugal About the Department Emerging Technologies & Incubation (ETI) is where new and bold products are built and released within Cloudflare. Rather than being constrained by the structures which make Cloudflare a hugely successful business, we are able to leverage them to deliver entirely new tools and products to our customers. Cloudflare’s edge and network make it possible to solve problems at massive scale and efficiency which would be impossible for almost any other organization. About the Team We build products at the intersection of AI, search and retrieval, data insights, and product engineering. As AI agents change how people discover and interact with the Internet, new problems are emerging around how content is found, understood, retrieved, and kept current. Cloudflare is uniquely positioned to help website owners make their content discoverable and to help agents find relevant, trustworthy information across our network. Building these capabilities requires solving problems across distributed systems, crawling, content ingestion, indexing, retrieval quality, developer experience, and reliable product delivery. Cloudflare also has a unique perspective on how the Internet is changing. Our global network observes signals that can help us understand trends, identify when content changes, and measure the pulse of the Internet. Used responsibly, these signals could improve existing products, help customers and AI companies find fresher and more relevant information, and create entirely new capabilities and products. The opportunity is broad and still evolving. We need to deliver excellent products today while continuing to identify the problems Cloudflare is uniquely positioned to solve next. We are a tight-knit group that communicates and collaborates regularly. We celebrate our achievements, support each other when we make mistakes, and hold each other and our work to a high standard. About the role We are looking for an Engineering Manager to lead engineering across some of our AI and Internet Data Insights portfolio. You will be responsible for the people, execution, and engineering quality behind products that help customers make their content discoverable and turn complex Internet signals into useful experiences. You will partner closely with Product Management and engineering teams across Cloudflare to deliver current priorities and shape future opportunities. This is a management role for someone who is deeply technically credible. You will not be expected to write most of the code, but you should be able to understand the systems your engineers operate, challenge architectural decisions, ask the right questions when something is going wrong, and step into a technical problem when the situation calls for it. At the same time, we are looking for a manager, not a tech lead with direct reports. Your success will be measured by the quality and output of the team you build, the engineers you develop, and the systems and products they deliver. This role may require flexibility to be on-call outside of standard working hours to address technical issues as needed. What you'll do Manage, coach, and grow engineers working across AI-powered search, Internet data insights, and customer-facing products. Own execution by establishing clear priorities, creating predictable delivery, and giving engineers the context and autonomy to own meaningful areas of the product. Lead the development of search and retrieval capabilities that help people and AI agents find relevant, trustworthy, and current content. Partner closely with Product Management to understand customer problems, shape the roadmap, and turn broad opportunities into clear engineering outcomes. Help identify how signals from Cloudflare's global network can produce useful and trustworthy insights for customers, partners, and other Cloudflare products. Explore where Cloudflare's unique view of Internet activity can improve content discovery, enable new product experiences, or support entirely new products. Balance near-term product delivery with thoughtful technical investments that allow promising ideas to grow. Own the operational health of the systems in your area, including observability, incident response, data and search quality, and long-term reliability. Develop technical leaders and create space for engineers to lead architecture and implementation. Responsibilities We want you to love it here. This role is a great fit for you if: You have led and developed high-performing engineering team(s) and can point to what that team shipped and how the people on it grew. You are technically credible with experienced engineers. You can review a design, understand the trade-offs in a distributed system or data platform, and recognize when a technical problem needs deeper investigation. You are comfortable managing a team working across several related technical areas and can create clarity without requiring every problem to fit neatly into a single box. You care deeply about reliability and quality, particularly when the output of a system is data that people use to understand the Internet. You have strong product judgment and enjoy working with Product Management to decide what is worth building, what needs improvement and what should not be built at all. You are comfortable with ambiguity and with finding structure in areas where the opportunity is clearer than the roadmap. You communicate clearly, give direct feedback, and can explain complex technical decisions to both engineers and non-engineers. Examples of Desirable Skills, Knowledge, and Experience Strong technical grounding in distributed systems, search systems, data-intensive systems, Internet infrastructure, or adjacent areas. Experience building or operating products involving crawling, content ingestion, indexing, retrieval, analytics, or large-scale data processing. Experience operating systems where correctness, reliability, and quality matter as much as feature delivery. A track record of hiring, developing, and retaining strong engineers. Experience partnering closely with Product Management to shape and execute a roadmap. Experience taking products or major capabilities from an ambiguous opportunity to a clear customer outcome. Strong written and verbal communication. Bonus Points Familiarity with Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), which combines information retrieval with generative AI to produce answers grounded in selected source material. Experience building products for AI developers, AI agents, publishers, or content-heavy websites. Experience working with large-scale telemetry or Internet-scale datasets. Experience turning complex underlying systems or data into useful products for a broad audience. Familiarity with Cloudflare Radar, Internet measurement research, or the broader ecosystem of tools used to understand Internet performance, availability and security. Compensation For Portugal based hires: Estimated annual salary of €74,000 - € 111,000 The final offer will be inclusive of time exemption, in alignment with the applicable law and collective bargaining agreements. Since the project, we've provided services to more than 425 local government election websites in 33 states. 1.1.1.1 : We released 1.1.1.1 to help fix the foundation of the Internet by building a faster, more secure and privacy-centric public DNS resolver. This is available publicly for everyone to use - it is the first consumer-focused service Cloudflare has ever released. Here’s the deal - we don’t store client IP addresses never, ever. We will continue to abide by our privacy commitment and ensure that no user data is sold to advertisers or used to target consumers. Sound like something you’d like to be a part of? We’d love to hear from you!
