About Us At Cloudflare, we are on a mission to help build a better Internet. Today the company runs one of the world’s largest networks that powers millions of websites and other Internet properties for customers ranging from individual bloggers to SMBs to Fortune 500 companies. Cloudflare protects and accelerates any Internet application online without adding hardware, installing software, or changing a line of code. Internet properties powered by Cloudflare all have web traffic routed through its intelligent global network, which gets smarter with every request. As a result, they see significant improvement in performance and a decrease in spam and other attacks. Cloudflare was named to Entrepreneur Magazine’s Top Company Cultures list and ranked among the World’s Most Innovative Companies by Fast Company. At Cloudflare, we’re not looking for people who wait for a polished roadmap; we’re looking for the builders who see the cracks in the Internet that everyone else has simply learned to live with. We value candidates who have the instinct to spot a "normalized" problem and the AI-native curiosity to create a solution using the latest tools. Our culture is built on iteration, leveraging AI to ship faster today to make it better tomorrow, while ensuring that every improvement, no matter how small, is shared across the team to lift everyone up. If you’re the type of person who values curiosity over bureaucracy, and that AI is a partner in solving tough problems to keep the Internet moving forward, you’ll fit right in. Available Locations: Austin (US), London (UK) About the role As a Senior Product Security Engineer, you will lead security assessments and vulnerability operations for Cloudflare’s core software products. In this role, you will analyze system architecture, threat model new features, and ensure that product-related security findings are accurately triaged, routed to the correct engineering owners, and mitigated within our SLAs. On any given day, you might conduct a deep-dive security review on a new feature design, triage a complex bug bounty submission, or work directly with engineering teams to resolve vulnerabilities from different sources like bug bounties, SAST, fuzzing and penetration tests. You will also work autonomously to identify areas where our manual processes slow down. You will write code and integrate AI/LLM solutions to automate initial triage and data enrichment, building tools that help the team handle security findings at scale. In short, your work will sit at the intersection of Product Security, Vulnerability Operations, and internal AI Tooling. Ideally, you have experience in conducting academic/vulnerability research with a focus on systems security. Responsibilities Autonomously Drive AI Security Innovation: Proactively identify gaps in our current capabilities and independently architect, build, and deploy AI-driven solutions to automate code analysis, optimize triage, and scale Product Security workflows. Security Architecture & Threat Modeling: Lead deep-dive security reviews and complex threat modeling sessions across distributed systems, embedding strict security requirements into product designs before development begins. Product-Focused Vulnerability Management: Own the lifecycle of product security findings. Ensure vulnerabilities are accurately triaged, mapped to the correct engineering owner, and mitigated in alignment with established SLAs. Bug Bounty Leadership: Oversee the technical triage and validation of Cloudflare’s external Bug Bounty program, prioritizing submissions based on real-world exploitability and business risk. Pentest Strategy & Support: Shape the scope of internal and external penetration testing engagements, serving as the technical liaison to ensure findings are deeply understood and remediated by development teams. Strategic Influence & Mentorship: Act as a force-multiplier for security across Cloudflare; mentor junior engineers, cultivate security champions within engineering organizations, and establish modern, paved-road developer guardrails. Desirable Skills, Knowledge, and Experience: Senior-Level Product/AppSec Expertise: Extensive, battle-tested experience in Product or Application Security within large-scale distributed cloud environments or SaaS platforms. Practical AI & Automation Engineering: Demonstrated ability to build production-grade automation scripts and tools . Must possess hands-on engineering experience leveraging AI/LLMs to solve operational or technical challenges. Advanced Threat Modeling & Risk Analysis: Mastery of threat modeling methodologies (e.g., STRIDE) and an analytical mindset capable of translating complex theoretical risks into prioritized, actionable business context. Vulnerability Lifecycle Ownership: Proven track record of managing, routing, and driving the remediation of vulnerabilities across multi-stakeholder engineering organizations while strictly enforcing SLAs. High Influence & Communication: Superb cross-functional leadership skills; the ability to confidently influence senior engineering leaders, resolve ownership ambiguity, and champion security initiatives without explicit authority. Bonus points: Offensive Mastery: Familiarity with offensive security tooling and modern exploitation techniques used during professional penetration testing. Program Management Experience: Experience scaling crowdsourced security programs (e.g., HackerOne, Bugcrowd) or optimizing agile project management workflows within JIRA. Experience in integrating hardware security features into production code bases Equity This role is eligible to participate in Cloudflare’s equity plan. We ensure that all of the new and existing features and functionality that Cloudflare offers can be managed at scale and meet the needs of our massively growing, global customer base. About the role As a Senior Software Engineer in the Deploy@Scale team, you will provide technical leadership for the platform that powers safe, reliable, and automated deployments across Cloudflare. This is a senior IC role: you will set technical direction across multiple work streams, not just execute within one. You'll be expected to operate with significant autonomy - identifying the right problems to solve, driving architecture decisions that will hold up over multiple years, and influencing how dozens of engineering teams across Cloudflare think about safe change. You will partner directly with your EM and leadership to shape the multi-quarter roadmap, and you'll be a primary technical voice in cross-team design reviews, RFCs, and incident retrospectives that touch deployment safety. You'll spend meaningful time unblocking and elevating the rest of the team: reviewing designs before they become code, pairing on the hardest problems, and raising the technical bar through mentorship - without needing to be a people manager to do it. You'll be defining what the platform is, deciding what not to build, and making the tradeoffs which ensure the system is safe, fast, and scalable five years from now. Where we're heading From human-in-the-loop to machine-in-the-loop: fully automated, health-mediated deployments as the default, at hundreds of thousands of releases a day. Consolidating a fragmented landscape: unifying release orchestration, health mediation, feature flagging, and configuration rollback into one coherent platform. AI as a first-class part of the platform : you'll help define where and how AI assists both the platform and the humans operating it. This is a unique opportunity to work on complex, globally distributed systems that underpin every Cloudflare product. You will play a key role in advancing the infrastructure that enables fast, safe delivery of changes to production, directly impacting the reliability and velocity of Cloudflare's global network. You will collaborate with the team to understand business needs and develop technical solutions, working closely with internal customers to turn their workflows into platform capabilities. You will thrive in a fast-paced iterative engineering environment with short release cycles. This role may require flexibility to be on-call outside of standard working hours to address technical issues as needed. Examples of desirable skills, knowledge, and experience 8+ years of hands-on software engineering experience, including a track record of owning the architecture of complex, distributed, production-critical systems end to end. Demonstrated technical leadership beyond your own code: driving RFCs and design reviews that other senior engineers and teams rely on, and being sought out as a technical escalation point. Judgment for ambiguity — comfortable defining the problem and the roadmap, not just the solution, in an environment where requirements are not fully specified upfront. Deep experience with safety, observability, and automation in production systems: designing rollback paths, health signals, and guardrails that other systems and teams build on top of. Experience influencing technical direction across team boundaries — through architecture, mentorship, or platform APIs/contracts — without direct authority. Comfort operating in a fast-moving environment with AI as a working tool: fluent use of AI-assisted development, critical evaluation of its output, and a point of view on where it should and shouldn't be trusted in a safety-critical system. Experience with workflow orchestration, long-running/durable execution, or large-scale distributed systems is a strong plus. Strong written and verbal communication — this role requires writing docs and RFCs that persuade and align, not just describe. Bonus points Prior experience owning a deployment, progressive delivery, or change-management platform at scale. Experience leading a technical migration across many independent teams (e.g., a platform sunset/replacement). Equity This role is eligible to participate in Cloudflare’s equity plan. If you’re the type of person who values curiosity over bureaucracy, and that AI is a partner in solving tough problems to keep the Internet moving forward, you’ll fit right in. Available Locations: Lisbon, Portugal About the Department Emerging Technologies & Incubation (ETI) is where new and bold products are built and released within Cloudflare. Rather than being constrained by the structures which make Cloudflare a hugely successful business, we are able to leverage them to deliver entirely new tools and products to our customers. Cloudflare’s edge and network make it possible to solve problems at massive scale and efficiency which would be impossible for almost any other organization. About the Team We build products at the intersection of AI, search and retrieval, data insights, and product engineering. As AI agents change how people discover and interact with the Internet, new problems are emerging around how content is found, understood, retrieved, and kept current. Cloudflare is uniquely positioned to help website owners make their content discoverable and to help agents find relevant, trustworthy information across our network. Building these capabilities requires solving problems across distributed systems, crawling, content ingestion, indexing, retrieval quality, developer experience, and reliable product delivery. Cloudflare also has a unique perspective on how the Internet is changing. Our global network observes signals that can help us understand trends, identify when content changes, and measure the pulse of the Internet. Used responsibly, these signals could improve existing products, help customers and AI companies find fresher and more relevant information, and create entirely new capabilities and products. The opportunity is broad and still evolving. We need to deliver excellent products today while continuing to identify the problems Cloudflare is uniquely positioned to solve next. We are a tight-knit group that communicates and collaborates regularly. We celebrate our achievements, support each other when we make mistakes, and hold each other and our work to a high standard. About the role We are looking for an Engineering Manager to lead engineering across some of our AI and Internet Data Insights portfolio. You will be responsible for the people, execution, and engineering quality behind products that help customers make their content discoverable and turn complex Internet signals into useful experiences. You will partner closely with Product Management and engineering teams across Cloudflare to deliver current priorities and shape future opportunities. This is a management role for someone who is deeply technically credible. You will not be expected to write most of the code, but you should be able to understand the systems your engineers operate, challenge architectural decisions, ask the right questions when something is going wrong, and step into a technical problem when the situation calls for it. At the same time, we are looking for a manager, not a tech lead with direct reports. Your success will be measured by the quality and output of the team you build, the engineers you develop, and the systems and products they deliver. This role may require flexibility to be on-call outside of standard working hours to address technical issues as needed. What you'll do Manage, coach, and grow engineers working across AI-powered search, Internet data insights, and customer-facing products. Own execution by establishing clear priorities, creating predictable delivery, and giving engineers the context and autonomy to own meaningful areas of the product. Lead the development of search and retrieval capabilities that help people and AI agents find relevant, trustworthy, and current content. Partner closely with Product Management to understand customer problems, shape the roadmap, and turn broad opportunities into clear engineering outcomes. Help identify how signals from Cloudflare's global network can produce useful and trustworthy insights for customers, partners, and other Cloudflare products. Explore where Cloudflare's unique view of Internet activity can improve content discovery, enable new product experiences, or support entirely new products. Balance near-term product delivery with thoughtful technical investments that allow promising ideas to grow. Own the operational health of the systems in your area, including observability, incident response, data and search quality, and long-term reliability. Develop technical leaders and create space for engineers to lead architecture and implementation. Responsibilities We want you to love it here. This role is a great fit for you if: You have led and developed high-performing engineering team(s) and can point to what that team shipped and how the people on it grew. You are technically credible with experienced engineers. You can review a design, understand the trade-offs in a distributed system or data platform, and recognize when a technical problem needs deeper investigation. You are comfortable managing a team working across several related technical areas and can create clarity without requiring every problem to fit neatly into a single box. You care deeply about reliability and quality, particularly when the output of a system is data that people use to understand the Internet. You have strong product judgment and enjoy working with Product Management to decide what is worth building, what needs improvement and what should not be built at all. You are comfortable with ambiguity and with finding structure in areas where the opportunity is clearer than the roadmap. You communicate clearly, give direct feedback, and can explain complex technical decisions to both engineers and non-engineers. Examples of Desirable Skills, Knowledge, and Experience Strong technical grounding in distributed systems, search systems, data-intensive systems, Internet infrastructure, or adjacent areas. Experience building or operating products involving crawling, content ingestion, indexing, retrieval, analytics, or large-scale data processing. Experience operating systems where correctness, reliability, and quality matter as much as feature delivery. A track record of hiring, developing, and retaining strong engineers. Experience partnering closely with Product Management to shape and execute a roadmap. Experience taking products or major capabilities from an ambiguous opportunity to a clear customer outcome. Strong written and verbal communication. Bonus Points Familiarity with Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), which combines information retrieval with generative AI to produce answers grounded in selected source material. Experience building products for AI developers, AI agents, publishers, or content-heavy websites. Experience working with large-scale telemetry or Internet-scale datasets. Experience turning complex underlying systems or data into useful products for a broad audience. Familiarity with Cloudflare Radar, Internet measurement research, or the broader ecosystem of tools used to understand Internet performance, availability and security. Compensation For Portugal based hires: Estimated annual salary of €74,000 - € 111,000 The final offer will be inclusive of time exemption, in alignment with the applicable law and collective bargaining agreements.
