About the Team The Automation team at Clumio (Commvault) works closely with the backend team to help build and validate a cloud-scale SaaS backup platform that helps enterprises meet their cloud data protection needs. For many customers, backup is not a “nice-to-have” — it is a mandatory foundation driven by compliance, audit, and security requirements, where recovery speed, cost efficiency, and the ability to handle large-scale data are critical differentiators in real-world environments. Our systems protect and recover large volumes of cloud object data in a cloud-native way. Compared to native cloud backup solutions, we deliver up to 10× faster recovery times, roughly half the cost for S3 workloads, and the ability to reliably support significantly larger data scales. These outcomes come from deliberate engineering decisions across system architecture, data flows, and failure-handling strategies.The platform is designed to gracefully handle and recover from failures through reprocessing and retries, while maintaining correctness and reliability at scale. Role Overview As a Software Engineer focused on automation, you will help ensure a very high engineering quality bar for Clumio’s best-in-class SaaS platform for data protection in the public cloud. You will work closely with Development, Product Management, and Customer Success teams, and grow your skills alongside experienced engineers. This is a great opportunity for a new college graduate or early-career engineer who is passionate about learning Python-based automation, and who wants to learn about modern SaaS platforms and their deployments in clouds like AWS, GCP, and Azure. The team builds Python-based automation to interact with and manipulate AWS infrastructure that simulates customer environments, involving services such as EC2, RDS, DynamoDB, S3, Cognito, SQS, SNS, VPC, CloudFormation, Lambda, Kubernetes, and Docker. As an automation team member, you get to build best-in-class data-generation tools to set up scale environments and build REST API libraries. What You’ll Do Work with a highly motivated team of engineers in a fast-paced environment. Design and build test automation frameworks and tools. Set up infrastructure (storage, compute, networking) to run automated tests. Design and implement automated tests, including end-to-end integration tests and load/stress tests. Help drive adoption of best practices in testing and product quality. Deliver under tight deadlines using agile methodology. Participate in requirement reviews and collaborate with Customer Success teams to help resolve customer escalations. Collaborate through design discussions and code reviews, and work with senior and principal engineers to align your work with the broader technical direction. Qualifications New college graduate, or 1+ year of industry experience in software development or test automation. Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field. Solid programming fundamentals in an OOP language such as Python or Go. A highly motivated self-starter with a builder’s mindset and a passion for quality. Working knowledge of English. Beyond core backup and recovery, the team also builds customer onboarding, metering and billing, reporting, alerting, and ML-driven insights. We operate a mature, production-proven platform on AWS — including Amazon S3, DynamoDB, and the industry's first data protection solution for Apache Iceberg — and are actively expanding into multi-cloud data protection across GCP and Azure. Role Overview As a Software Engineer on the Clumio backend team, you implement and deliver features and components within the data protection platform, working under the guidance of Senior and Principal Engineers. This role focuses on writing reliable, maintainable, production-ready code as part of larger systems that are critical to customer-facing operations. You take problems from implementation through to production — building features and workflows, writing tests, and helping operate and improve them once they ship. You make sound implementation decisions within an established design, learning to balance correctness, simplicity, and performance, and you grow your ownership of specific components over time. This is a role built for growth. You'll learn how large-scale, cloud-native data protection systems are designed, operated, and kept correct under real-world failure — working on problems of genuine scale rather than toy projects. With close mentorship from Senior and Principal Engineers and regular code review, you'll sharpen your engineering fundamentals, take on steadily larger and more complex work, and grow along a clear path toward broader system ownership. Basic Qualifications Software engineering experience through professional roles internships, or academic and personal projects. Solid grounding in computer science fundamentals — data structures, algorithms, and complexity analysis — with the ability to apply them to practical problems. Proficiency in at least one modern programming language (e.g., Go, Java, Python, C++, Rust). Ability to break a problem down into a correct, maintainable solution, and the instinct to ask clarifying questions when requirements are unclear. A willingness to learn how production systems are built, operated, and debugged, with support from the team. Working knowledge of English.
