Senior Staff Software Engineer, Autonomous Pilot Integration – Expeditionary
Flight System Integration
Shield AI is a venture-backed defense-tech company with the mission of protecting service members and civilians with intelligent systems. Its products include Hivemind autonomy software, V-BAT and X-BAT aircraft, and Aechelon simulation and synthetic reality technologies. With offices and facilities across the U.S., Europe, the Middle East, and Asia-Pacific, Shield AI’s technology actively supports operations worldwide. For more information, visit www.shield.ai. Follow Shield AI on LinkedIn, X, Instagram, and YouTube. The Autonomous Pilot Integration team for expeditionary platforms builds autonomy solutions for V-BAT — an unmanned aircraft operating in expeditionary environments for ISR, target acquisition, communications, and multi-agent missions. The team also builds autonomy for X-BAT, a new platform under development by the aircraft team; for X-BAT, the team builds on top of the existing mission autonomy solution from the Strategic Systems (ACP) portfolio and works closely with the aircraft team on the flight-autonomy interface. We combine capabilities from the Autonomy Capabilities team (motion planning, tactics), the Perception team (e.g., ViDAR, ATR), and the HivemindSDK to develop the autonomy software that runs on these platforms, then integrate, validate, and field it on the real hardware — for U.S. and international defense customers. In this role, you'll own the technical direction for the Expeditionary portfolio, driving the evolution of autonomy architecture across V-BAT and X-BAT while ensuring scalable, mission-ready solutions that support current operators and future platforms. You'll define long-term technical strategy, solve the organization's most complex integration challenges, and influence the direction of autonomy software spanning mission behaviors, platform interfaces, payload integration, executive autonomy, and multi-agent operations. You'll partner closely with the Aircraft team, Autonomy Capabilities, Perception, GCS, Strategic Systems (ACP), engineering leadership, customer/program offices, and operational users to ensure Expeditionary autonomy continues to evolve while remaining reliable in operational environments.

With offices and facilities across the U.S., Europe, the Middle East, and Asia-Pacific, Shield AI’s technology actively supports operations worldwide. For more information, visit www.shield.ai. Follow Shield AI on LinkedIn, X, Instagram, and YouTube. The Autonomous Pilot Integration team builds autonomy solutions for a wide range of CONOPs and mission sets. We combine capabilities from the Autonomy Capabilities team (motion planning, tactics), the Perception team (e.g., track fusion), and the HivemindSDK to develop the autonomy software that runs on an unmanned platform — air, maritime, space, or effects/expendables, depending on the program — then integrate, validate, and field it on the real hardware. In this role, you'll write new autonomy code — such as mission behaviors, platform-specific control, multi-agent coordination, contingencies, and executive autonomy — and own it end-to-end from software-in-the-loop, to hardware-in-the-loop, to vehicle-in-the-loop, to live test exercise. You'll partner closely with the Autonomy Capabilities and Perception teams, feature crews, and external platform integrators (vehicle/autopilot control vendors, C2 providers). It's a hands-on role for engineers who like seeing their code operate in the real world — whether that's flying, sailing, orbiting, or downrange — and want to be there when it does. At this level, you'll own the technical direction across multiple programs — driving the autonomy reference implementation and common patterns that portfolios adopt, anticipating where the autonomy stack needs to evolve, adapting as programs and priorities shift, and aligning with engineering leadership early. You'll serve as the subject-matter expert other teams seek out on hard, ambiguous problems in unknown solution spaces; mentor senior engineers and other team leads; drive cross-team improvements in rigor and process; and represent the team to engineering leadership, customer/program offices, and standards bodies. Shield AI is committed to developing cutting-edge autonomy for unmanned platforms across every operating domain — air, maritime, space, and effects/expendables — in service of the U.S. Department of Defense and our international defense customers. Our Autonomous Pilot Integration engineers bridge the gap between R&D and deployment, ensuring autonomous systems function reliably and effectively wherever and whenever they're needed most.

Job Description: This role is for a Computer Vision C++ Engineer to support the development of real-time perception capabilities for Shield AI's autonomous systems. The Computer Vision Engineer will be responsible for designing, developing, and integrating advanced computer vision algorithms into high-performance C++ software pipelines. The role will focus on building custom perception capabilities from the ground up, with an emphasis on real-time performance, reliability, and deployment in edge compute environments. This position is required to increase the team's capacity and technical depth in real-time computer vision, image processing, and applied machine learning. The successful candidate will bring strong C++ software engineering skills, experience developing high-performance or real-time systems, and a deep understanding of computer vision fundamentals. They should be capable of translating research concepts into deployable software and comfortable working on bespoke algorithms rather than relying only on existing libraries. Experience with areas such as camera calibration, multi-view geometry, geospatial registration, 3D reconstruction, image rectification, sensor alignment, coordinate transformations, or target localization would be highly valuable. The role will also support the development of geometry-based computer vision pipelines, including applications such as camera modelling, intrinsic and extrinsic calibration, image-to-world projection, geolocation from imagery, visual registration, and multi-sensor spatial alignment. Familiarity with photogrammetry, epipolar geometry, bundle adjustment, terrain or map-based registration, and deployment of geometry algorithms into real-time C++ systems would be beneficial. Candidates with a Master's or PhD in Computer Science, Engineering, Robotics, Computer Vision, Geomatics, Photogrammetry, or a related field would be well aligned with the technical needs of the team, though strong applied industry experience is also highly relevant.

Job Description: Shield AI is seeking a Senior / Staff C++ Software Engineer, Edge Systems to help define and build the software foundations that power autonomous systems operating in demanding real-world environments. This role sits within the Edge Systems team, where software meets hardware. You'll solve complex engineering problems spanning Linux edge computing, imaging, sensor integration, mission systems, and autonomy, building software that runs on real hardware in operational environments rather than laboratory prototypes. As one of our senior technical contributors, you'll combine hands-on software engineering with technical ownership. You'll influence architecture, mentor engineers, guide technical direction, and help shape the long-term evolution of our edge software platform while remaining close to implementation. You will develop modern C++ applications for Linux-based edge compute platforms, including NVIDIA Jetson-class systems, ARM64, and Windows systems. Your work will span sensor integration, imaging pipelines, calibration, diagnostics, deployment, developer tooling, and mission-critical applications that demand high performance, reliability, and maintainability. This is an application and systems software role, focused on Linux-based edge computing rather than bare-metal firmware or microcontroller development. No two weeks look the same. One day you might be optimising image-processing pipelines on embedded GPUs. The next you could be designing software architecture for future autonomous platforms, integrating new sensors, or collaborating with AI researchers to bring new capabilities into production. You'll work alongside highly capable systems, hardware, autonomy, AI, product, and test engineers who enjoy solving difficult problems together. We believe our strongest technical leaders remain hands-on, and we expect our Staff Engineers to continue writing software while multiplying the effectiveness of the engineers around them. This position may be hired at Senior or Staff Engineer level depending on experience. Responsibilities and scope will be aligned to the successful candidate.
