Engineering Manager - Cx App Foundations

On-sitefull timeMid-LevelLondon, United Kingdom
Apply Now

Our Global Structure Deliveroo is now part of DoorDash, bringing together teams with even greater reach, scale, and ambition. Depending on your role, you may collaborate with teammates, systems, and leaders across DoorDash and Wolt. Together, we’re unlocking new possibilities as one global team. About the Team Cx App Foundations is a platform organisation within our global Cx organisation. It provides shared consumer foundations and platform capabilities used by engineering teams across Wolt, DoorDash, and Deliveroo. Within this organisation, the Velocity team owns the paved road for consumer app development across mobile and web: shared SDKs and client foundations, integration patterns and multi-brand customisation, migration playbooks and reference implementations, and developer tooling that makes building on shared foundations fast and safe. Our mission is to reduce the cost, time, and risk of building consumer experiences across platforms and brands. Product teams own customer-facing experiences; our job is to make sure they can spend their time on delivering delightful experiences. The team is AI-native: AI is a default part of how we design, build, and ship software. About the Role As the Engineering Manager, you will lead a team of experienced engineers across mobile and web, collaborating closely with product teams, design, and adjacent platform organisations across three brands. Your primary responsibility will be owning the team's roadmap and delivery of shared client foundations, and driving their adoption across the organisation, so that product teams ship delightful customer experiences without rebuilding the foundations under them. You will be a key player in keeping the team's operating model healthy: clear intake from stakeholders, predictable delivery, and support expectations that keep the platform from drifting into a general escalation queue. You will also guide architectural and system design decisions with your tech leads. You will stay hands-on: contributing code, reviews, and prototypes alongside the team is part of the job. This role is ideal for a leader who has run platforms, SDKs, or shared services for other engineering teams, communicates clearly across brands and time zones, and wants their impact measured through what other teams achieve with the foundations you ship. Location: London, UK. This is a hybrid role, with 3 days a week in the office. What you'll be doing Own the platform roadmap - the shared SDKs, client foundations, and developer tooling the team ships - and sequence it against the migration and adoption goals of the three brands Drive adoption of the shared foundations by partnering with product teams, running onboarding and rollout support, and making the supported path the easiest path Lead, coach, and grow experienced mobile and web engineers, keeping growth conversations, calibration, and feedback loops running Keep the team's operating model healthy: clear intake (stakeholder management, shared-platform, product-specific, or exception work), supported capabilities with entry criteria and support expectations, and predictable delivery Guide architectural and system design decisions for client foundations that three brands and multiple app platforms depend on Stay hands-on by contributing code and reviews alongside the team, and champion AI-native development practices Grow the team through hiring What You’ll Need to Thrive You have 3+ years of experience managing engineers, including a team with senior engineers You have a solid background (5+ years) in mobile or web engineering, with enough technical depth to hold your own in architecture discussions about client foundations You use AI tooling fluently in your day-to-day work and stay close to the code You have run a platform, SDK, or shared service that other teams depend on, and know how to treat internal customers as customers You work across boundaries naturally: product teams, design, other platform organisations, data/analytics and stakeholders in other locations and time zones You hold a high bar for engineering quality and can navigate production incidents and release tradeoffs with calm structure Why Join Us? At Deliveroo, you’ll do work that matters—solving real-world problems in a three-sided marketplace that’s constantly evolving. We’re food lovers, problem solvers, community builders and more, brought together by a shared drive to make things better. Working here you can expect to: 🔧 Solve meaningful problems at real scale Work on a complex, always-on marketplace that impacts millions every day. 🌱 See your impact, fast Ship, test and improve ideas quickly in a low-hierarchy, high-ownership environment. 🧠 Grow through challenge and ownership Take on big, ambiguous problems and accelerate your career with strong support. 🌎 A culture built for builders High standards, collaboration, flexible working and continuous learning. 💰 Share in the success you help create Competitive salary and equity options, so you’re rewarded for the impact you make. Diversity, Equity and Inclusion At Deliveroo, we know that a great workplace reflects the world around us and that true diversity and inclusion make us stronger, more creative, and better at what we do. We’re committed to fostering an environment where everyone can do their best work and feel they belong. We also work with technologies including Kafka, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Redis, AWS, Kubernetes, Docker, gRPC, and modern cloud infrastructure. Our Humble Expectations We're looking for engineers who have: An AI-first mindset, with a deep experience in leveraging modern AI tools and solid engineering principles to solve problems end-to-end, independently of any specific technology stack. About the Role We are looking for experienced engineers to join the EU Traffic team, based at Deliveroo, part of DoorDash, and help build the next generation of DoorDash’s Traffic platform. We are building a single, shared platform designed to serve DoorDash, Deliveroo, and Wolt, so your work will shape reliability and security for all three marketplaces. You will work on core components of our traffic stack, including our Cloudflare edge configuration (managed as code), and service-to-service authentication and authorization (workload identity, token issuance and validation at the mesh layer). This role sits at the intersection of distributed systems, networking, and security. Bonus points if you… Experience with programming languages like Go, C++, Python or Rust Experience with AWS, especially with networking primitives like LBs, Privatelink, etc. and Kubernetes or other container management tool Experience with service mesh technologies such as Envoy, Istio or Linkerd Familiarity with xDS or control plane architectures Experience building RPC frameworks or client-side networking libraries Experience with Infrastructure as Code tooling like Terraform Experience with Gitops delivery tooling such as ArgoCD, Helm, Atlantis. Join us in our mission to transform the way people shop and eat, where impact, innovation and growth drive everything we do. Our Engineering teams tackle complex technical challenges across a global, three-sided marketplace, building and scaling systems that serve millions of customers, riders and partners every day. We’re looking for a Machine Learning Engineering Manager to join us in London on a hybrid basis (3 days a week). In this role, you’ll lead the team that owns intelligence across our ordering experience, from store page and item selection through cart, upsell and checkout, plus bundling. Personalisation is one of the biggest levers we have to drive value to our customers, and your team will make the app feel less like a generic catalogue and more like one that understands what each customer is trying to do. What you’ll be doing Lead and develop a high-performing team of around 12 Machine Learning Engineers, distributed across multiple pods and spread across London, Finland and Berlin, fostering a culture of technical excellence, ownership and rapid experimentation. Own and evolve the ranking, recommendation and personalisation systems across ordering surfaces, helping customers find the right items quickly as our selection grows. Set the technical vision for the team’s ML ecosystem, balancing near-term product goals with longer-term bets on areas like on areas across recommendations to agentic approaches, and intent-aware experiences that adapt dynamically to how customers browse and act. Lead the unification of our recommendation models across brands (Deliveroo, Wolt and DoorDash) and markets, working out how to power personalisation at global scale while keeping it feeling hyperlocal, and how to balance reusable core models against surface-specific adaptations without ending up with a sprawl of models. Partner with Product, Data Science and neighbouring engineering teams to identify high-impact opportunities, define roadmaps and translate ambiguous business problems into ML solutions. Senior Backend Engineer - Case Management

On-sitefull timeSeniorLondon, United Kingdom

Role overview We are looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to help build and evolve our new Common case-management system, which powers support-case handling across DoorDash, Wolt, and Deliveroo. You will own significant end-to-end initiatives across our backend services: case lifecycle, routing and assignment, queue management, case evidence and history, and migration from legacy systems. This is a hands-on role for someone who can turn ambiguous customer and operational problems into durable technical solutions, coordinate other engineers, and set the standard for reliability and craftsmanship on the team. What you’ll do Lead one or more project-level Case Management initiatives, on your own or by guiding a group of engineers, from discovery and design through rollout, measurement, and operational ownership. Design and build scalable backend services and APIs for case creation, routing, assignment, transfers, audit history, notes, attachments, and queue-management workflows. Help deliver feature parity with legacy platforms while safely migrating traffic across DoorDash, Wolt, and Deliveroo. Make and own most technical decisions within your scope. Write project-level design documents covering how sub-features interact, identify dependencies and risks, and break work into parallelizable delivery plans. Scope ambiguous customer and operational problems, weigh long-term against short-term trade-offs, and design durable solutions. Partner with Product, Operations, Support, Data, and other engineering teams to define the right problems. Shape the team roadmap through prototypes, data analysis, project proposals, and backlog prioritization. Run the coordination a project needs, such as status updates and dependency tracking, and escalate early to keep delivery on time. Enforce team-wide quality objectives: lead design reviews, calibrate quality metrics, and improve logging, monitoring, alerting, and escalation policies. Serve as first responder or incident commander, model good incident practice, and turn what you learn into playbooks and backlog work. Introduce and guide AI best practices for the team, including evals, data privacy, and review of AI-generated code, and take part in AI-powered projects when they are central to the product. Design reusable, self-serviceable solutions, and consider cost efficiency, including compute and AI costs, in key designs. Mentor engineers through code reviews, design guidance, tech talks, and constructive feedback. Interview candidates, join sell calls, and take part in hiring events when the team needs them. Must-have qualifications Strong backend engineering experience, including designing and operating backend services, APIs, asynchronous workflows, and data models at meaningful scale. Proficiency in at least one modern backend language, and a record of writing exemplary code for the core functionality of key components. Demonstrated ownership of complex, customer-facing or operations-critical projects from technical design through production rollout. Experience breaking projects into parallelizable work, identifying dependencies and risks, and giving accurate estimates for yourself and others. Hands-on experience using AI development tools to improve productivity, while validating generated output for correctness, security, privacy, maintainability, and reliability. Strong product judgment: the ability to turn ambiguous workflows and user needs into simple, maintainable technical solutions. Proven ability to collaborate across functions, bring the right stakeholders into decisions at the right time, and explain trade-offs clearly to technical and non-technical audiences. Strong engineering craft: testing, code review, observability, incident response, security, and operational readiness, with experience designing for reliability. Comfort working on systems with high correctness and auditability requirements, including traceability of decisions and changes. A mentoring mindset and a record of raising team-wide engineering standards. Nice-to-have qualifications Go experience. Experience with migration from legacy systems, gradual rollouts, traffic shadowing, and feature-parity programs. Experience supporting internal tools or operational user interfaces from the backend side. Experience with high-volume, multi-region, or multi-tenant systems. Experience as an incident commander or in running an on-call rotation. Experience building AI-powered features, including evaluation of model output. What success looks like Delivers a major Case Management initiative with clear technical ownership, predictable execution, and measurable customer or business impact. Improves the reliability, maintainability, and cost efficiency of the Common system while enabling safe migration from legacy case-management systems. Helps move support traffic onto the Common system without reducing case-resolution quality. Builds solutions that other engineers and operators can confidently reuse and operate. Acts as a technical leader within the team: unblocks peers and partner teams, improves engineering decisions, influences the roadmap, and strengthens cross-functional execution. Diversity, Equity and Inclusion At Deliveroo, we know that a great workplace reflects the world around us and that true diversity and inclusion make us stronger, more creative, and better at what we do. We’re committed to fostering an environment where everyone can do their best work and feel they belong. Golang Backend Engineer, Financial Product Fraud

Your job is to make sure every payout and transaction lands with the right person. We have spent years getting very good at protecting the things a marketplace has always had to protect: checkout fraud, account takeover, courier abuse. But we are no longer only a marketplace. We now issue banking products, lend to merchants, move instant payouts to couriers, and collect cash on the doorstep. Every one of those is a new way for money to leave the platform. This is a new team, and it owns that surface: fraud wherever money moves through the platform. Who receives it, who lends it, who collects it, and who holds it in a financial account. Think instant payout rails, merchant cash advances, and platform-issued banking and earned-wage products serving millions of couriers and merchants. These are live loss surfaces, and the volume grows with every financial product we launch. We are now looking for a Backend Engineer (Golang) to build that protection. You will design and ship real-time detection and automated enforcement for our financial products across DoorDash, Wolt, and Deliveroo. The work is high-throughput, low-latency, and unusually consequential: a rule you ship on Monday can stop a serious loss by Friday. It is also close to greenfield, so you will be setting the patterns every future financial product inherits on day one. This role will be based in London , UK as one of the founding engineering roles in our London hub, working closely with our teams in Helsinki and Berlin. What you'll do: Build and maintain high-throughput, low-latency backend services in Go that score financial events in real time, including payout enrollments, bank account links, credit applications, and account-to-account transfers. Design fraud detection and automated enforcement for our financial products end to end: from signal collection through to the decision that blocks a fraudulent payout. Build on and extend our shared fraud decisioning platform, so signals, rules, and models work across all three of our brands instead of being rebuilt three times. Partner closely with risk analysts, data scientists, and product managers to turn observed fraud patterns into shipped detection, and to know when a rule, a model, or a product change is the right answer. Work across team boundaries with our account security, payments fraud, and financial product teams. We build on their signals rather than rebuild them, so clean interfaces matter. Contribute to architectural discussions and technical decisions as we establish the fraud infrastructure baseline for financial products, with support from senior engineers on the team. Write well-tested, observable code and help the team hold a high quality bar. In fraud, a silent failure is a loss event. Our expectations: 3 to 6 years of professional software engineering experience, including backend services you have shipped and owned in production. 1+ years of production experience in Golang, or strong experience in another backend language and real enthusiasm for picking Go up quickly. A working understanding of low-latency, high-throughput distributed systems. Real-time decisioning comes with a latency budget, and you are keen to learn to build inside one. Hands-on experience with SQL and/or NoSQL databases, and some exposure to event-driven architectures (Kafka or similar). Willingness to operate what you build, including a share of on-call, with a pragmatic approach to reliability. Uses AI tooling in day-to-day development and can critically evaluate its output for correctness and quality. Nice to have Experience in fraud, risk, payments, lending, or financial crime, especially money movement fraud, bank account linking fraud, payout abuse, or lending fraud. Experience with rules engines, real-time feature stores, or ML model serving in a decisioning path. Background in Kotlin, Java, Python, or Node.js alongside Go. Familiarity with cloud infrastructure (AWS, GCP). Experience working across multiple brands, regions, or regulatory regimes. What we value A product-oriented mindset. You think beyond the ticket, understand the "why" behind the work, and take a high level of responsibility for outcomes rather than output. Comfort with ambiguity. This is a new team on a new surface; parts of the charter are still being drawn, and you will help draw them. A track record of owning a project or feature end to end, especially in fast-paced environments. Clear and proactive communication, with a collaborative spirit. We work across three companies and several time zones, so we move fast, but we succeed together. An adversarial instinct. The best fraud engineers enjoy thinking like the attacker. Diversity, Equity and Inclusion At Deliveroo, we know that a great workplace reflects the world around us and that true diversity and inclusion make us stronger, more creative, and better at what we do. We’re committed to fostering an environment where everyone can do their best work and feel they belong. We believe in equality of opportunity and welcome candidates from all backgrounds regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, socio-economic background, religion, or belief. We’ll share details on how to request support so we can ensure you have a fair and equitable experience.
