Senior Software Engineer, GenAI Platform

On-sitefull timeSeniorLondon, United Kingdom
Apply Now

Our Global Structure Deliveroo is now part of DoorDash, bringing together teams with even greater reach, scale, and ambition. Depending on your role, you may collaborate with teammates, systems, and leaders across DoorDash and Wolt. Together, we’re unlocking new possibilities as one global team. Senior Software Engineer, GenAI Platform About the Team Deliveroo's GenAI Platform team sits within Machine Learning Platform and builds the shared infrastructure that helps DoorDash, Wolt, and Deliveroo teams safely bring GenAI-powered products, agents, automation, and personalisation to production. Our mission is to increase the velocity of business impact from GenAI. A central pillar of that work is running frontier open-weight LLMs and VLMs (such as GLM, Qwen, Kimi, and DeepSeek) ourselves — real-time GPU serving, high-throughput batch inference, and fine-tuning on autoscaling GPUs — delivering large cost and latency wins (for example, a billion embeddings produced roughly 20× cheaper and visual models served roughly 72% cheaper). We also own core platform surfaces including the LLM Gateway, Agent Gateway, evals infrastructure, guardrails, and cost attribution. About the Role You will join a small, high-leverage team building production infrastructure for Generative AI at Deliveroo and DoorDash, leading the design and architecture of our open-weights model platform spanning inference and fine-tuning: real-time GPU serving, high-throughput batch inference, and model fine-tuning. You’ll set technical direction across model serving and inference engines, fine-tuning and training pipelines, GPU autoscaling and utilization, batch pipelines, backend services, and observability, and mentor engineers as you go. This role is ideal for a senior engineer who enjoys owning ambiguous, high-impact systems and pushing the cost/performance frontier of GPU inference and fine-tuning in a fast-moving technical area where product needs, model capabilities, vendor ecosystems, and cost/performance tradeoffs are evolving quickly. You’re excited about this opportunity because you will… Lead the design of infrastructure that helps teams move GenAI ideas from prototype to production, increasing the velocity of business impact from AI across the company. Own and evolve our open-weights serving stack — real-time GPU endpoints, high-throughput batch inference, and fine-tuning (SFT/DPO/LoRA) — alongside the LLM Gateway, Agent Gateway, evals infrastructure, guardrails, and cost attribution. Architect scalable, high-performance systems for model serving, batch inference, GPU autoscaling, and fine-tuning that power real customer and internal automation use cases Push the cost and latency frontier of GPU inference — turning batch jobs that took days into hours and cutting inference cost by multiples — while giving product teams a clean choice across open-weight and closed-source models with reliability, fallback, observability, and cost controls built in. Build platforms that support rapid experimentation while meeting production standards for latency, scale, monitoring, SLOs, playbooks, and operational excellence. Partner closely with — and raise the technical bar for — ML engineers, product engineers, data scientists, and platform teams across DoorDash, Wolt, and Deliveroo to turn emerging GenAI capabilities into durable platform primitives. Set technical direction for the future of the company's centralised GenAI platform — including emerging directions such as reinforcement learning (RLHF/RLVR), agent optimisation, and other post-training and agentic techniques — enabling the next generation of AI-powered products, agents, automation, and personalisation. We’re excited about you because… BSc, MSc or PhD in Computer Science or equivalent 5+ years of industry experience in software engineering Deep backend engineering fundamentals, especially in Python and distributed systems. Track record of designing and owning production services, APIs, data pipelines, or ML infrastructure at scale. Experience operating systems in production, including observability, debugging, reliability, incident response, and performance/cost optimization. Deep hands-on experience with LLM inference and/or fine-tuning of open-weight models in production — serving (latency, throughput, batching, autoscaling, GPU utilization) and/or fine-tuning (SFT/DPO/LoRA). Demonstrated technical leadership: leading design across ambiguous, fast-moving technical areas, mentoring engineers, and turning customer use cases into reusable platform capabilities Proficiency in using AI coding tools (e.g., Claude Code, Codex, Cursor) in the full software development lifecycle, including designing, generating code, testing, monitoring and releasing software Nice To Haves Experience with LLM inference engines and serving frameworks (e.g., vLLM, SGLang, TensorRT-LLM) in production Experience with distributed/multi-node fine-tuning and training pipelines (SFT, DPO/RLHF, LoRA), including data preparation and evaluation GPU performance work — multi-node/distributed inference, KV-cache/memory optimisation, quantisation (FP8/INT8/AWQ/GPTQ), or cold-start/throughput tuning Experience with Kubernetes, cloud infrastructure (AWS/GCP), GPUs, serverless/elastic GPU platforms (e.g., Modal), or high-throughput batch systems Experience with LLM gateways, model routing, vendor abstraction, or cost attribution Experience building developer platforms, internal platforms, or self-serve infrastructure Experience building and deploying AI agents or MCP servers in production Experience with eval systems, LLM observability, tracing, RAG, search, or vector databases Diversity, Equity and Inclusion At Deliveroo, we know that a great workplace reflects the world around us and that true diversity and inclusion make us stronger, more creative, and better at what we do. Backend Engineer — Agent Experience

On-sitefull timeMid-LevelWorldwide (On-site)

About the team Agent Experience builds the AI-powered backend services that power agent-assist tooling on our Astra support surface — helping support agents resolve customer, merchant, and Dasher issues faster. We sit at the intersection of LLM-backed product features and high-volume, latency-sensitive support infrastructure. What you'll do Build and maintain backend services for agent-assist features on Astra, taking on feature-level work with increasing independence. Translate requirements into working code: design the feature-level approach, write an RFC when the change affects other engineers, and implement it end-to-end. Integrate with LLM-backed features — wiring up prompt/completion calls, handling provider responses, and validating output quality and correctness. Break down assigned project work into tasks, provide accurate estimates, and keep your own progress and dependencies on track. Apply AI tooling thoughtfully to your own workflow (coding, testing, review) and critically evaluate its output rather than taking it at face value. Participate in code review — both giving and receiving — to help the team hold a high bar for correctness, quality, and standards compliance. Collaborate with senior engineers and partner teams to clarify problem definitions, unblock yourself, and flag risks or blockers early. What we're looking for Solid backend engineering fundamentals in Go, with experience shipping and maintaining production services. Exposure to LLM-powered features in production (prompt/completion integration, provider APIs) is a plus — we'll ramp you up if you haven't worked with this directly. Ability to independently own feature-level work: from a written requirement to tested, shipped code. Comfort working in a domain with multiple chat/support surfaces — willingness to trace issues to the right service rather than guessing. Clear technical writing (RFCs for feature-level decisions) and good judgment about when to ask for help versus push forward. 2–4 years of backend engineering experience, with a track record of growing ownership and scope. Diversity, Equity and Inclusion At Deliveroo, we know that a great workplace reflects the world around us and that true diversity and inclusion make us stronger, more creative, and better at what we do. We’re committed to fostering an environment where everyone can do their best work and feel they belong. Deep hands-on experience with Kafka or comparable event streaming systems as a platform, infrastructure service or business-critical production dependency. Strong technical leadership skills, with a track record of defining technical direction, shaping roadmaps and leading multi-engineer or cross-team initiatives. Ability to make and own technical decisions in ambiguous situations, using data, operational signals, customer needs and long-term system health to guide tradeoffs. Strong coding ability in Java, Go, Python or similar languages, with a focus on reliable, maintainable, observable and scalable production systems. Experience improving production reliability through automation, observability, capacity management, incident response, operational readiness and sustainable on-call practices. Strong distributed systems fundamentals, including Linux, networking, storage, JVM-based systems, fault tolerance, backpressure, capacity planning and performance tuning. A force-multiplier mindset: you create leverage through reusable technical foundations, clear documentation, strong engineering practices, mentoring and removing single points of failure. Strong communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence platform, infrastructure, product and reliability teams without relying on authority. Nice to have Experience contributing to Kafka or related open source distributed systems. Experience with Redpanda, WarpStream, AutoMQ, Pulsar or similar streaming technologies. Staff Software Engineer, Dev Environments

On-sitefull timeLead / StaffLondon, United Kingdom

The Dev Environments team sits within DoorDash's Foundations group (Platform Engineering). We own the local and remote developer experience across the DoorDash group of companies supporting over 5000 engineers. Our mission is to enable engineering velocity, quality, and efficiency at significant scale by removing friction from the day-to-day developer loop: spinning up a working environment, getting code building, and getting feedback fast, whether the "developer" is a human or an AI agent. As a Staff Engineer on Dev Environments, you'll be recognised as an expert across the dev environments space, covering both local and remote dev flows, devcontainers, IDE/remote backends, and how they all fit together, including owning accountability for outcomes that span multiple teams. You'll set technical direction for the team's roadmap, unblock deep cross-cutting technical problems other engineers can't resolve alone, and mentor senior and mid-level engineers. You'll partner closely with engineering leadership across the group to translate ambiguous, company-wide developer-experience problems into a concrete, sequenced technical strategy. What You’ll Be Doing Technical direction Define the architecture for how thousands of engineers across DoorDash, Wolt, and Deliveroo actually develop and ship code: local and remote dev containers, remote IDE/VM lifecycle, and the full local-to-remote loop. Build monorepo dev tooling at scale. It's part of consolidating all the companies under DoorDash’s umbrella onto one global backend - you're setting the standard, not patching one org's tooling. Provision production-shaped environments in seconds, keep state in sync over the network, and make a remote machine feel local, reliably and cheaply, at thousands-of-concurrent-engineers scale. Expect to invent as much as you adopt: much of this is genuinely unsolved elsewhere in the industry. Design for AI agents as first-class consumers of the environment, not an afterthought: sandboxes that spin up on demand, run in parallel, and are safe to hand a real repo. Support agents launched from an IDE, a CLI, or a Slack message - with no laptop required to review and ship what the agent did. Collaboration & leadership Align teams that don't naturally sit adjacent to each other (e.g. Security, Infrastructure, Product Engineering) around unstructured, ambiguous problems where there's no existing playbook. Mentor engineers at all levels: run design reviews; raise the engineering bar through code review, pairing, and architectural guidance when appropriate. Help set the hiring bar: lead interview loops, help calibrate, and support onboarding of senior hires. What You’ll Need to Thrive Essential: A track record of shipping production systems and leading cross-team initiatives with group level impact - comfortable owning delivery end to end, from design through to production and adoption. Hands on fluency with the languages and tooling used to build developer tooling (e.g. Go, Python, TypeScript) and infrastructure-as-code (Terraform). Experience managing compute via Kubernetes (multi-tenant workload isolation, autoscaling ephemeral workloads, cost management), or lightweight VM/sandbox technology (e.g. Firecracker). Working knowledge of cloud networking, including securely and cost-effectively routing traffic across network boundaries (VPNs, service meshes, etc.) Experience integrating LLM/AI tooling into developer workflows - e.g. Claude Code - both locally, and remotely. Excellent written and verbal communication; able to influence senior stakeholders and align multiple non-adjacent teams without formal authority over them. Experience building close working relationships with the engineering teams who consume your platform, not just the platform team itself. Nice to have: Experience in developer platforms or adjacent infrastructure: devcontainers, remote development, remote IDE backends, or developer workstation tooling. Practical experience with JetBrains remote-backend flows, Codespaces/Codeserver-style products, or equivalent. Experience with remote build/execution systems (e.g. BuildBuddy), or large-scale build caching. Why Join Us? Our Global Structure Deliveroo is now part of DoorDash, bringing together teams with even greater reach, scale, and ambition. Depending on your role, you may collaborate with teammates, systems, and leaders across DoorDash and Wolt. Together, we’re unlocking new possibilities as one global team. Join us in our mission to transform the way people shop and eat, where impact, innovation and growth drive everything we do. Our Engineering teams tackle complex technical challenges across a global, three-sided marketplace, building and scaling systems that serve millions of customers, riders and partners every day. From real-time logistics to resilient infrastructure and marketplace optimisation, we design, build and operate technology that powers Deliveroo’s growth at scale. We’re looking for a Senior Android Engineer to join our SDUI team. In this role, you’ll help us build and scale our server-driven UI ( SDUI ) platform, enabling teams to build a UI once and have it deploy seamlessly to iOS, Android, and Web without redeploying a new app — performantly and consistently. This role is based in our London office with a hybrid setup, typically three days in the office. What You’ll Be Doing You’ll be joining the SDUI team. We own the Android rendering layer of our server-driven UI platform, and the backend services that drive it, ensuring every consumer surface built on it is fast, correct, and visually indistinguishable from native. Here’s what your day-to-day might look like: Drive technical execution by designing, building, and evolving the Android SDUI renderer — and the backend services (Kotlin, Golang, Protobuf) that feed it — to handle complex, real-time UI updates at scale. Lead architectural improvements and code reviews, ensuring the maintainability, visibility, and operational health of the renderer as more teams build on top of it. Partner with cross-functional disciplines (iOS and Web renderer engineers, product and design teams) to plan rollouts, align on platform decisions, and influence the roadmap. Own large-scale initiatives from design to delivery — including the push to bring SDUI motion and interaction quality to native-equivalent, and the ongoing migration off legacy rendering systems. Support the growth of others by mentoring colleagues and taking an active role in our engineering hiring process. What You’ll Need to Thrive Our ideal candidate will bring strong expertise in some of these areas and curiosity to grow in others: 5+ years building Android applications at scale , with a deep understanding of Kotlin and Jetpack Compose. Backend development experience , specifically with Golang, Kotlin, and Protobuf, and the comfort to move between client and server code as the work demands. Experience building or maintaining a server-driven / declarative UI system , with a keen interest in pushing what's possible with declarative rendering — bonus points if that included Litho or another DSL-based renderer. A product mindset , and the instinct to apply it to how you design platform services for the teams that build on top of them. Demonstrated ownership of technical delivery within cross-functional teams, guiding implementation choices and technical design for a platform other teams build on. Strong communication skills , working across time zones with iOS, Web, and Backend counterparts, plus PMs and multiple product teams. A pride in software craft , with a commitment to writing readable, well-designed, and thoroughly tested mobile code. Bonus points for exposure to Figma-to-code tooling, design-token/theming systems, or accessibility work in mobile rendering. Why Join Us? At Deliveroo, you’ll do work that matters — solving real problems for a platform that every consumer-facing team builds on. We’re renderer engineers, systems thinkers, and platform builders, brought together by a shared drive to make shipping UI changes fast and safe. Working here you can expect to: 🔧 Solve meaningful problems at real scale — Work on a rendering platform that every consumer surface depends on, used by millions of customers every day. 🌱 See your impact, fast — Ship, test and improve the renderer quickly in a low-hierarchy, high-ownership environment. 🧠 Grow through challenge and ownership — Take on big, ambiguous platform problems and accelerate your career with strong support. 🌍 A culture built for builders — High standards, collaboration, flexible working and continuous learning. 💰 Share in the success you help create — Competitive salary and equity options, so you’re rewarded for the impact you make. ➡️ Want a deeper look at how we build?
