Fortune and Fortune Media IP Limited are not affiliated with, and do not endorse products or services of GitLab. About the role As a Staff Backend Engineer, you will provide technical leadership across your team and adjacent teams, solving the highest-scope and most complex problems in your area. You will lead large, cross-cutting backend initiatives, drive our modular architecture strategy, and define the standards that let teams move faster without compromising quality, security, reliability, or operability. This is a technical leadership role that combines deep backend expertise, systems judgment, product judgment, and influence across organizational boundaries. You will work with Product, Frontend, Infrastructure, Security, Data, Engineering Managers, and engineers across product groups, bringing subject matter expertise, and you will do it without relying on formal authority. Why you’ll love this role Leverage: Your work multiplies across teams. The platforms, standards, and architectural decisions you lead determine how quickly everyone else can ship. Genuinely Hard Problems: You’ll lead the modernization of a large monolith toward modular, reusable, appropriately independent systems — at the scale of a platform used by millions of users. Influence Without Bureaucracy: You’ll shape technical direction across teams through clear written proposals and decision records, and partner with Product and Engineering leadership on platform roadmap and investment trade-offs. Frontier AI Work: You’ll lead adoption of AI-assisted and agentic engineering workflows and define the review, quality, security, and privacy guardrails that make them safe to rely on. Autonomy: You’ll thrive in our remote-first, asynchronous organization, where clear written communication and self-direction are the pillars of success. What you’ll do Lead Cross-Cutting Initiatives: Lead the technical design and delivery of large backend initiatives that span teams, and identify and remove systemic bottlenecks across product and infrastructure groups. Own Architecture Strategy: Drive modular backend, service, data, and platform architecture. Lead modernization of the monolith and legacy backends toward modular, reusable, and appropriately independently operated systems — while preventing fragmentation and service sprawl. Set the Standards: Define and improve standards for APIs, contracts, compatibility, schema evolution, testing, security, performance, observability, operability, and maintainability — plus the build, test, deploy, release, rollback, and production-readiness practices needed to operate modular features safely. Establish Shared Patterns: Create the patterns for dependency management, data ownership, eventing, failure isolation, service maturity, and operational documentation. Establish Go service patterns and Kubernetes operating practices where they matter to our production estate, and guide Rust adoption where it solves a real systems, security, performance, or supply-chain problem. Own What You Build in Production: Take part in on-call and incident response for the systems your teams own, act as a technical escalation point during complex incidents, and turn what you learn into architectural and operational improvements that prevent recurrence. Influence and Partner: Shape technical direction across teams without formal authority, and partner with Product and Engineering leadership on platform-level roadmap decisions and investment trade-offs. Grow Engineers: Mentor Senior and Intermediate engineers, shepherd technical debt reduction and reusable patterns that improve throughput, and raise the technical capability of the wider team. Lead AI Adoption: Lead team-level adoption of AI-assisted and agentic workflows, including the quality, security, privacy, and operational guardrails, and help engineers direct, validate, reject, and course-correct agent output. What you’ll bring Cross-Team Technical Leadership: A sustained record of technical leadership across more than one team or a broad product area. Deep Architecture Experience: Deep backend architecture and production experience in complex applications, services, or platforms, including scaling or governing APIs, service platforms, data systems, modular monoliths, or shared backend components. Modularization in Production: Experience modernizing a monolith or legacy backend architecture in production, and with modular architecture such as bounded contexts, package encapsulation, ports and adapters, service extraction, event-driven boundaries, or an equivalent approach. Influence Without Authority: A strong ability to create alignment through clear written proposals and decision records, so decisions are documented, understood, and adopted without constant escalation. Product Judgment: The ability to balance customer outcomes, delivery speed, technical health, reliability, and long-term platform investment. Mentorship: Experience mentoring engineers and shaping standards through code review, documentation, and example. Agentic AI Leadership: Production experience with AI-assisted or agentic engineering workflows, including the ability to evaluate and improve how a team adopts them. Helpful experience Go services and APIs at scale. Kubernetes and cloud-native operations, including deployment, scaling, observability, rollback, and production readiness. Rust adoption or production ownership for systems, security, performance, or platform components. Ruby/Rails modularization and large-monolith modernization. PostgreSQL scaling, data partitioning, queues, messaging, or distributed systems. Security-sensitive product or software supply chain engineering. Experience across SaaS, single-tenant, self-managed, or air-gapped deployment constraints. The base salary range for this role’s listed level is currently for residents of the United States only. An overview of this role As a Staff Engineer, you'll be the technical anchor for GitLab's Nonlinear Productivity team in the US: the person who decides what "proven" means before something ships, and who helps shape what the team builds next, not just how to build it. It's a from-scratch, generalist team with no dedicated product manager — that ownership starts on day one. Some examples of the problems this team takes on: Cutting the time it takes to complete a good code review — one that still keeps a human in the loop — by half, using agentic solutions. Turning a manual, error-prone release step into an agentic workflow that catches its own mistakes before a human ever has to. What you'll do Set the technical direction for the team's agentic systems, from how agents are orchestrated to where a step should stay human-owned, and defend those calls once they're tested against real code. Discover and prioritize sources of friction across GitLab's SDLC, driving the fix — agentic, process-based, or both — from a rough hypothesis through to a shipped, measured result. Work across any part of GitLab's codebase as the problem requires, since this team operates like a small, generalist group rather than one scoped to a single service. Apply distributed systems judgment to catch cases where generated code looks correct but breaks under concurrency, at scale, or across deployment topologies (including self-managed, dedicated, and multi-tenant environments), and coach others to do the same. Mentor senior and mid-level engineers on agent engineering practices and distributed systems judgment, through design reviews and pairing that raise the team's collective bar rather than just your own output. Collaborate with the India-based group a few times a week to align on the roadmap, and represent the team's technical progress to stakeholders in the Chief Technology Officer's organization. Serve as a bar raiser for the team's hiring, owning the Technical Leadership round for other Staff-level candidates as the team scales. Own a greenfield technical foundation from day one, with your scope and impact free to grow as the team scales. What you'll bring Experience building reliable agentic or large language model (LLM)-based systems, including multi-step orchestration, tool use, guardrails, and recovery. Ability to work autonomously in unfamiliar codebases and drive solutions from discovery through completion. Strong distributed systems and computer science fundamentals, including coordination, consistency, idempotency, rate limiting, failure modes, and degradation under load. Proficiency in Go, Rust, or Python, with the ability to read and modify code in the others. A track record of delivering results from unclear or incomplete requirements — able to take a complex, loosely specified problem and decompose it into a concrete proposal of small, shippable steps. Experience designing evaluation frameworks for systems where "looks plausible" and "is actually correct" are different questions, and a track record of raising the quality bar for a team's output, not just your own. A history of unblocking and enabling teammates — through design reviews, technical writing, or mentoring — and of engaging regularly with other teams to find where collaboration actually pays off. About the team Nonlinear Productivity — shortened internally to "NLP," with no relation to natural language processing — is one of GitLab's newest teams: a strategic incubation group that reports into AI Platform leadership under the direct sponsorship of the CTO. Solutions that prove out internally are the team's path to a monetized, customer-facing GitLab offering. An overview of this role As a Senior or Staff Backend Engineer with the Database Excellence group , you'll build and evolve database automation and PostgreSQL as a service capabilities for GitLab. The level will be determined during the hiring process. You'll use Go to automate the full lifecycle of PostgreSQL across GitLab's infrastructure, making database operations safer, more consistent, and easier to scale for databases that sit behind high-throughput, always-on internet services. You'll work closely with partner teams to shape how GitLab provisions and manages PostgreSQL in a fully remote, highly collaborative environment. Some examples of our projects: SQL Traffic Replay Tooling , which validates upgrades and changes against real production workloads. PostgreSQL as a Service Platform , which provides standardized, automated provisioning and lifecycle management for internal product databases. PostgreSQL Major Version Upgrade Automation , which supports safe, repeatable major upgrades at GitLab.com scale. What you’ll do Design, build, and maintain Go-based automation that manages the full PostgreSQL lifecycle, including provisioning, configuration, upgrades, failover, scaling, and decommissioning, reducing reactive operational work that currently takes more than 80% of the team's time. Build automation that works across infrastructure-as-code tooling and cloud infrastructure, and evaluate operator-based approaches as the platform evolves. Use AI agents as a regular part of building and operating services, including implementation, review, and reducing repetitive work, while keeping the context agents need in the repository so the whole team can build on it. Build for internet scale by designing automation and services for high-throughput, always-on production workloads, where GitLab.com traffic sets the bar for correctness, latency, and availability. Integrate compute, storage, networking, identity and access management, and managed data services across cloud providers into one coherent PostgreSQL platform instead of creating bespoke setups for each database. Build GitLab's PostgreSQL as a service platform to replace bespoke database setups with standardized, automated provisioning and lifecycle management, so supporting more databases doesn't require growing the operations team at the same rate. Collaborate closely with product management, infrastructure, software delivery, and other engineering teams to design and ship high-performing solutions. Research, design, and implement improvements to PostgreSQL performance, scalability, and data health, helping maintain more than 8 months of operational runway for all critical database saturation points. Review database automation and Go changes from other engineers and contributors, with attention to safety, maintainability, and performance. Document automation practices, PostgreSQL operational patterns, and guidance that helps engineers use and contribute to the platform. Build safe, repeatable automation for PostgreSQL major version upgrades at GitLab.com scale, validating changes against real production traffic before rollout. Operate what you build in production from end to end, using production feedback to guide each iteration. What you’ll bring Professional software engineering experience working with PostgreSQL in large, complex production environments, including experience building or operating a database-as-a-service product. Proficiency with Go, including designing, implementing, testing, and reviewing backend services. Experience developing Kubernetes operators, controllers, or similar automation for the lifecycle of stateful services, especially databases. Kubernetes experience is one way to demonstrate this skill, but isn't required; comparable experience building database or infrastructure automation is welcome. Comfort with infrastructure as code and core database operations concepts such as high availability, replication, backups, and system-level performance trade-offs. Familiarity with Ruby is a plus but isn't required. Much of GitLab's application codebase uses Ruby on Rails, and being able to read it helps when designing automation that application teams depend on. We’ll expect you to become comfortable with it on the job, not on day one. Strong written communication skills and comfort working asynchronously in an all-remote, distributed team. Self-directed work style with effective organizational skills, the ability to manage priorities as a "manager of one," and alignment with GitLab's values of transparency, collaboration, inclusion, and open source contribution, as well as its operating principles . Ownership of the technical direction for a major initiative such as the PostgreSQL as a service platform, turning an ambiguous problem into an architecture and a sequenced plan that several engineers can execute in parallel. Influence beyond the team, setting the patterns other engineers follow, partnering with sibling database, infrastructure, and platform teams, and growing engineers through design reviews and mentorship. About the team The Database Excellence group keeps GitLab’s databases running reliably through proactive health management, operational excellence, and strategic enablement. We maintain operational runway by identifying and addressing saturation points, operate infrastructure through automated and scalable processes, and provide tools and frameworks that help teams build features sustainably. Our primary focus is GitLab.com, and we're expanding our scope to provide database health frameworks and tooling that benefit self-managed customers as well. Staff Backend Engineer - Database Change Management An overview of this role As a Senior Backend Engineer, Database Upgrades, you'll help replace GitLab's sequential database migration system with a dependency graph model that makes upgrades faster and safer for GitLab.com and self-managed customers. You'll lead the design and delivery of a migration validation and test framework, including versioned fixture data across about 1,000 tables, a continuous integration (CI)-integrated test runner, and required correctness checks. You'll also serve as the senior technical anchor for our India-based engineering group, using clear written decisions to influence a team working across India, Asia-Pacific, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and the United States. The manager for this role is based on the US West Coast. We're open to hiring this role at Staff level for a candidate whose experience matches that scope. At Staff level, you'll also own architecture decisions for the migration system and lead design work across teams. What you’ll do Lead the design and delivery of the migration validation and test framework from initial approach through production use. Contribute to a dependency graph migration system that supports safe ordering, parallel execution, and three-phase, low-downtime upgrades. Mentor intermediate engineers through pairing, code review, and design feedback. Make and document technical decisions asynchronously so team members can build on them across time zones. Review schema migrations from engineers across GitLab for safety, backward compatibility, and reliability. Collaborate with Distribution, Quality Assurance, Database Architecture, Database Automation, and database framework teams to support GitLab.com and self-managed deployment methods. At Staff level, author and defend architecture proposals and represent the team in technical reviews across GitLab. What you’ll bring Deep experience with Ruby on Rails in large production codebases, including Active Record migration internals, or comparable depth in another framework's migration system, such as Django or Ecto. Production PostgreSQL experience, including schema changes on large tables, locking behavior, and data definition language failure modes under load. A track record of leading delivery of a system from design through implementation and adoption. Experience mentoring engineers through pairing, code review, and technical feedback. Strong written communication and the ability to make progress independently in an asynchronous, distributed environment. Sound judgment when balancing reliability, safety, backward compatibility, and delivery needs. An interest in serving as a senior technical presence for an India-based engineering group while collaborating across regions. About the team We’re working on the largest change to GitLab's migration system in its history, with a focus on making upgrades safer and easier for customers, including the roughly one-third of self-managed customers who are two or more required upgrade stops behind.
