Senior Software Engineer, Simulation
Transport - Engineering
Who we are Atoms is building the machines that power the next era of progress. Over the last decade, software has transformed the digital world. But the physical world, where food is made, minerals are mined, goods are moved, and industries are run, remains far less intelligent, far less efficient, and far more constrained. We’re changing that. Atoms builds Physical AI— real-world robots for the industries that move civilization forward, starting with food, mining, and transport. Our systems are designed to understand, predict, and control the real world with precision, turning complex physical operations into something more reliable, more scalable, and more productive. This work requires more than robotics. It requires deep integration across hardware, software, AI, operations, manufacturing, and real estate. We don’t just build machines in a lab. We deploy them into real environments, operate them, learn from them, and improve them until they work at scale. We are roboticists, engineers, operators, and builders. We believe the next great technology companies will not only transform information, but the physical systems that shape everyday life. If you want to work on hard problems with real-world impact, join us. About the role We are seeking a Senior Software Engineer to build the log replay and scenario execution systems at the core of our simulation platform. In this role, you will take a recorded log from storage, to a replayable test case, to a scored result, and own the execution, determinism, and reporting in between. You will do this across on-road and off-highway programs, and you will own the tooling other engineers use to run scenario suites. What you’ll do Log replay. Build the pipeline that converts recorded logs into replayable test cases, including ingest, indexing, retrieval, and replay of a specific run on demand. Implement open-loop scoring against ground truth and closed-loop replay where the simulated machine is allowed to diverge. Scenario execution. Build the execution layer that runs a scenario identically every time, including clock control, seed and configuration management, and results traceable to a software version. Continuous integration. Integrate simulation into CI. Maintain the commit, nightly, and regression workflows, and keep failures attributable. Metrics and reporting. Implement the pass criteria and metrics a release is judged against, and the reporting that reduces a batch of failing runs to an actionable list. Scale and cost. Run large batches efficiently, track the cost of a simulation run, and reduce it as volume grows. Tooling. Build the interfaces, visualizations, and command-line tools that make the platform usable by engineers who did not build it. Cross-functional work. Work with autonomy and robotics on failure definitions, with bench and hardware-in-the-loop engineering on the path from simulation to bench to vehicle. What we’re looking for Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Robotics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field with 5+ years of software engineering experience, or a master's with 3+ years required. Proficiency in C++ and Python, including the ability to read, navigate, and debug large codebases. Experience building and operating data or test infrastructure at scale, including pipelines, batch execution, storage and indexing. Experience with simulation, log replay, or large-scale automated testing for robotics or autonomous vehicles. Working experience with a robotics middleware and its logging and replay tooling. Experience handling autonomous driving or robotics sensor data across multiple modalities and timestamps, including camera, LiDAR, and radar. Practical understanding of determinism and reproducibility, including clock control, seed management, and configuration pinning. Experience integrating test workloads into continuous integration. Working fluency with modern AI coding and agentic development tools. Clear written communication covering design notes and test results. Willingness to travel occasionally to deployment and test sites. Ability to work onsite five days a week in San Francisco. Why join us At Atoms, you’ll work on one of the defining challenges of our time—bringing automation into the physical world to drive real, lasting impact. Own the RFP process for outside consultants, the subsequent deliverables, and prepare consultant agreements for signature. Coordinate with the construction project manager and design team through document completion and value engineering, and track design progress against the schedule. Maintain the project trackers and reporting for leadership and partners. Review contracts and billings, and process invoices, change orders, and draw requests. Assist with building the playbooks and processes that let the next site move faster than the last one, across multiple markets, in an asset class nobody's built yet. Represent Atoms to partners, landlords, utilities, AHJs, consultants, and communicate project status clearly up to leadership. What we're looking for Required 3 to 6 years in real estate development, infrastructure project development, energy project development, construction management, or a related field. Direct hands-on experience with utility coordination, entitlements and permitting, real estate diligence, and development budgeting and scheduling. Advanced modeling skills. You will own and build the underwriting model and investment committee materials for your sites. Excellent communication skills, a can-do attitude, and commitment to the team's success. Experience incorporating AI into your everyday workflow while still owning the output and end product. This is a full time on-site role with expected travel across markets. Preferred Electrical infrastructure, data center, industrial, logistics, utility-scale energy, and/or aviation development experience. Familiarity with federal, state, and local aviation and air use regulations. Experience in California or other high-friction permitting environments, including building support among the stakeholders who control approvals. Experience navigating complex environmental approvals. Experience managing outside consultants and expediters. Familiarity with Bluebeam, Procore, Excel, and Google Workspace. What you’ll do At Otter POS, we build the backend that keeps restaurant point-of-sale running: orders, payments, menus, and device state across Android tablets in the kitchen and at the counter. Those services have to stay consistent when WiFi drops mid-service. As a backend engineer on this team, you will design and scale the services behind order orchestration, payment flows, offline-first sync, and multi-device coordination. We want product-minded or systems-focused backend engineers. You do not need prior POS experience. If you like distributed systems, careful API design, and reliability work under real restaurant conditions, you will fit here. Core responsibilities Design, build, and maintain Java backend services for order lifecycle, payments, device sync, and restaurant workflows. Design and optimize APIs and event-driven systems so POS devices, kitchen displays, and cloud services stay consistent with low latency. Build systems that keep working offline and sync across multiple devices in a facility. Work with Android engineers, product managers, and other teams to ship systems used in live restaurants. Keep code quality high through testing, code reviews, observability, and owning what you ship in production. What we’re looking for Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience is required. 3+ years of professional software engineering experience. Deep understanding of backend system design, APIs, data stores, microservices, concurrency, and distributed systems. Our stack heavily utilizes Java and Kotlin, but we care more about your engineering fundamentals than the specific languages you've used. Experience with relational and/or NoSQL databases (e.g., PostgreSQL, CockroachDB, Redis). Experience with cloud platforms like AWS, Google Cloud, or Azure. Preferred Qualifications Experience with event streaming or stream processing (e.g., Kafka, Flink). Experience building systems that handle ordering states, payment flows, or multi-device coordination. Familiarity with offline-first architectures, sync protocols, or conflict resolution (CRDTs a plus). Comfort working with mobile and client engineers, including how backend choices affect reliability on the device. Interest in building systems that restaurant operators and staff use every day.
