The primary function will be to work with our Marketing and Applications Engineering team to define, design and release analog and mixed signal products as well as assist our team with software and firmware development for our analog and mixed signal products. You will be part of an engineering team that is also responsible for defining system level reference design boards for our customers. The engineer will work under the guidance and mentoring of a senior Application Engineer. Programming experience with Python, Java, and/or C languages as well as knowledge of Verilog coding with FPGAs desired. This will include the following: Definition and Design of the Application Demo boards and System Level reference designs with collaboration from Apps and Marketing for satellites power systems. Schematic design, layout and BOM of the boards (Altium EDA is necessary). The candidate is eventually required to do PCB layouts. Working with our software development group to design and test the system GUI’s. Characterization and documentation of reference design electrical performance. Publication of User Manual/Design Guide and working with the build group to get the board released into production. Support of FAE or Marketing / Sales to help refine their application needs into deliverable reference designs to showcase solution performance. RESPONSIBILITIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Board Design and Validation of Performance (30-40% of time) : Time spent planning and conceptualizing/block level architecture for the reference design. Validate the performance of the reference designs / demo boards. Prepare validation plan and compile validation reports post bench testing/characterization. You will be expected to keep accurate lab notes (software of your choice) and document any test procedures for future reference. On simpler reference designs, you will be required to provide the test house with a test requirement document to enable them to verify the operation of the board before being placed in stock. On more complicated reference designs, you will be required to do the verification of the operation before the boards are put in stock. Documentation (30% of time): Generate User’s Guide that provide a clear explanation of the purpose of the reference design and the advantages it brings to the customer. User Guides should also include schematic of board, picture of board, performance of key specs with test conditions and any software information. It is important to document how the boards were tested in the User’s Guide, so the customer can reproduce our results. If required, will be expected to publish customers responses, and possible Articles. FrameMaker is our publishing software for our User Guides thus familiarity with this software is preferred. View more...About the Role Renesas is seeking a Principal FPGA Emulation & Prototyping Engineer to build and own the FPGA-based platforms that emulate our mixed-signal power ASICs before silicon. Working shoulder to shoulder with our silicon RTL and DSP architects, you will bring their designs up on FPGA to validate real-time digital, mixed-signal, and power-control architectures pre-silicon — proving out control loops, catching RTL issues early, and de-risking tape-out. These FPGA platforms are emulation vehicles, not production hardware. Success is measured by how faithfully and how fast they reproduce the target silicon: functional equivalence to the golden ASIC RTL, real-time (or near-real-time) performance for closed-loop power and DSP validation, and deep visibility for pre-silicon debug. What You'll Do Partner closely with silicon RTL and DSP architects to bring ASIC designs up on FPGA — advising on FPGA-ability and turning architectural intent into a working, real-time emulation platform. Adapt ASIC RTL for FPGA emulation while preserving functional equivalence to the golden design — handling clock-gating conversion, memory/SRAM macro mapping, reset and initialization schemes, tri-state/bus conversion, and stubbing or modeling of analog/mixed-signal blocks. Map designs onto the FPGA fabric to fit and to hit emulation speed — steering resource inference (DSP/multiplier slices, block vs. distributed memory), clocking, and pipelining so the design achieves the real-time performance the validation requires. Understanding of digital power-conversion control and mixed-signal systems — converter topologies, control loops, PWM/PFM, and magnetics — to build faithful models and validate power-control architectures. FPGA DSP implementation and real-time emulation of DSP datapaths: FIR/IIR/CIC filters, interpolation/decimation, FFT, FEC, including high-throughput techniques such as folding/unfolding. Experience with commercial FPGA prototyping platforms such as Synopsys HAPS, Cadence Protium, or Siemens Veloce. Model-based design with Simulink and/or Xilinx System Generator. High-speed interface experience: JESD204B, PCIe, 1G/10G Ethernet, Aurora. ASIC design or tape-out exposure, including DFT/scan considerations in emulation. Ability to architect and build a custom in-house FPGA prototyping platform — board architecture, high-speed PCB design, signal integrity, and bring-up — a plus as we may develop our own hardware in the future.
