Senior Engineering Manager, Ads Data Platform
Software Engineering
Every day, tens of millions of people come to Roblox to explore, create, play, learn, and connect with friends in 3D immersive digital experiences– all created by our global community of developers and creators. At Roblox, we’re building the tools and platform that empower our community to bring any experience that they can imagine to life. Our vision is to reimagine the way people come together, from anywhere in the world, and on any device. We’re on a mission to connect a billion people with optimism and civility, and looking for amazing talent to help us get there. A career at Roblox means you’ll be working to shape the future of human interaction, solving unique technical challenges at scale, and helping to create safer, more civil shared experiences for everyone. We're building the data foundation that makes advertising on Roblox possible. As a Senior Engineering Manager you'll lead a team of engineers building the systems that turn raw signal into trustworthy, privacy-safe, actionable data across five connected domains: core data infrastructure, identity, measurement, audience targeting, and feature engineering for ML. This is a hands-on leadership role at the center of our monetization strategy. Your team's work determines whether advertisers can reach the right audiences, prove positive ROI, and trust the numbers we report, all while upholding the privacy and safety standards our platform is known for. You'll set technical direction, grow a high-performing team, and partner closely with product, data science, privacy/legal, and the broader Ads organization. You Will Build and lead a team of high-caliber software engineers. You'll be responsible for hiring, performance management, career development, and fostering an inclusive, high-output team culture. Set and communicate a multi-quarter technical roadmap across core data, identity, measurement, targeting, and the ML feature platform, and make the prioritization and buy-vs-build calls that keep the team focused on the highest-leverage work. Partner with product management, data science, ML engineering, privacy/legal, and adjacent Ads and Data Platform teams to translate business goals into a coherent, well-sequenced engineering plan. Raise the bar on engineering quality across system design, data correctness, reliability (SLAs/SLOs), and operational excellence for systems that run continuously at massive scale. Champion privacy-by-design and responsible data handling as a first-class requirement, not an afterthought, in every system your team builds. Represent your team's work and trade-offs to senior leadership, and communicate technical risk and progress clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences. You Have 8+ years in software engineering with 3+ years managing engineers, including hiring and performance management. Experience delivering large-scale distributed data systems, data pipelines, streaming/batch processing, and data stores handling high volume and low latency. Strong foundation in at least one of: identity resolution, ad measurement/attribution, audience targeting/segmentation, or feature/data pipelines for ML. Demonstrated ability to set technical direction and successfully lead teams through ambiguity Excellent cross-functional collaboration and communication skills Working knowledge of data privacy principles and regulations (e.g., GDPR, CCPA/CPRA, COPPA) and a genuine commitment to building privacy-safe systems. Senior Director, Generative AI About the Role Roblox Build is our generative creation product, the platform where creators design, build, and publish 3D experiences. We are looking for a Senior Director of Generative AI to lead the Applied AI organization inside Build, responsible for turning state-of-the-art foundation models into high-quality, reliable creation systems at Roblox scale. This leader will own the full applied AI stack: model strategy and routing, model adaptation and fine-tuning, code generation (CodeGen), 3D layout generation (LayoutGen), and the evaluation science and infrastructure that tells us what actually works. You Will Own model strategy and routing for Build. Design and build an intelligent model layer that selects the right model for each creation task based on quality, capability, latency, cost, and safety, leveraging both frontier models and Roblox-adapted open-source models. Lead model adaptation across the Applied AI org, including fine-tuning, distillation, synthetic data generation, human feedback pipelines, and preference optimization for Roblox-specific creation tasks such as Luau code generation and 3D scene understanding. Drive CodeGen capabilities forward by building AI systems that understand creator intent, reason across multi-file Roblox experiences, execute tools, and reliably make complex changes to existing games, going well beyond code completion. Build LayoutGen intelligence by developing the AI capability that turns a creator's intent into coherent 3D scenes, including object selection, spatial reasoning, placement, aesthetic quality, and iterative editing. Own evaluation as a core technical discipline. Build the benchmarks, quality metrics, judge methodologies, experiment infrastructure, and human evaluation pipelines that answer whether model, prompt, or routing changes actually improve creator outcomes. Close the feedback loop between model development, evaluation, and production, ensuring that quality signal flows continuously from creator outcomes back into training data, model updates, and release decisions, rather than operating as separate silos. You Have 10+ years of experience in machine learning and AI, with 5+ years in senior technical leadership roles overseeing applied AI or ML engineering organizations that have shipped generative AI systems into production at scale. Deep technical grounding across multiple areas of applied AI, including LLM post-training (RLHF, DPO, distillation), model routing and adaptation, agentic systems, code generation, or evaluation science, with enough depth to recruit, challenge, and lead exceptional scientists and engineers in each area. Demonstrated experience building and leading high-performing organizations that span both AI research scientists and production engineers, including hiring, developing talent, and making difficult personnel decisions. Strong evaluation fluency, with a track record of building eval frameworks that predict production outcomes, designing benchmarks that measure what matters, and building the infrastructure to run experiments continuously at model, prompt, and routing level. Experience operating cross-functionally in complex technical organizations, with the ability to influence and align across research, product engineering, and platform teams without relying on hierarchy. Genuine interest in the creation problem. You find the specific challenge of AI-assisted 3D world creation and domain-specific code generation compelling, not just as a vehicle for building AI systems. You Are A builder and a shipper who cares about getting things into production and measuring whether they actually work, not just publishing promising results. Technically credible across the stack. You can engage deeply with scientists on evaluation methodology, data quality, and model behavior, and equally deeply with engineers on architecture, inference latency, and reliability. Decisive under ambiguity. You make principled tradeoffs between rigor and velocity, know when good enough is good enough, and can articulate your reasoning clearly. Direct and honest. You give clear feedback, surface problems early, and create an environment where your team can do the same. Mission-driven. You care about the people building on Roblox, and you connect the technical work of the Applied AI org to the experience of the millions of creators using the tools. For roles that are based at our headquarters in San Mateo, CA: The starting base pay for this position is as shown below. The actual base pay is dependent upon a variety of job-related factors such as professional background, training, work experience, location, business needs and market demand. As a Senior Engineering Manager, Communications, you'll lead the team responsible for in-game text chat — one of the most-used surfaces on Roblox and a cornerstone of how our community connects. Every day this system carries billions of messages across hundreds of millions of users, in real time, across 2D and 3D spaces, on every device we support. You'll own the roadmap and the engineering org behind it: building rich, immersive, and engaging communication experiences that let people and creators express themselves safely and seamlessly — better than in real life. This is a role for a leader who thinks like a product builder as much as an engineer. You'll balance the demands of massive scale and rock-solid reliability with a relentless focus on the user experience, shipping features that make conversation on Roblox feel effortless, expressive, and safe. You'll grow and develop a team of engineers, set technical direction, and partner deeply across product, design, trust & safety, and infrastructure to define what communication on Roblox becomes next. You Will Lead, grow, and develop a team of software engineers building the in-game text chat platform, setting a high bar for engineering excellence, ownership, and career growth. Own the technical vision and multi-quarter roadmap for real-time text messaging, balancing new product capabilities against scale, latency, reliability, and cost. Drive the architecture and evolution of messaging systems that reliably deliver billions of messages per day at low latency to a global, cross-platform audience. Partner with product and design to shape a compelling communication experience — treating chat as a product, not just infrastructure — and translate ambiguous goals into concrete plans and shipped features. Collaborate closely with Trust & Safety, Policy, and ML teams to ensure every messaging experience is safe and civil by design for a young, global user base. Establish strong engineering practices around quality, observability, on-call health, and operational excellence for systems that must always be available. Communicate clearly and influence across the organization — with peers, leadership, and cross-functional partners — to align teams behind a shared direction. You Have 8+ years of software engineering experience, including 3+ years managing and growing engineering teams. A track record of building and shipping consumer-facing products at scale — ideally messaging, communications, social, or other real-time systems. Strong product intuition: you make thoughtful tradeoffs between user experience, technical complexity, and speed, and you care about what you ship, not just how it's built. Deep experience designing and operating large-scale distributed systems, with a strong grasp of reliability, latency, and the realities of running high-throughput services in production. Demonstrated ability to attract, develop, and retain strong engineers, and to build healthy, high-performing teams. Excellent communication and cross-functional leadership skills, with a history of driving alignment across product, design, and engineering. A bias toward action and a comfort with ambiguity, especially at high scale. You Might Also Have Experience with real-time messaging protocols, presence systems, or high-fanout delivery infrastructure. Background in trust & safety, content moderation, or safety-critical systems. Experience building communication or social features for large, global, or youth audiences. Familiarity with cross-platform (mobile, console, desktop) product development. For roles that are based at our headquarters in San Mateo, CA: The starting base pay for this position is as shown below. Transform & Visualize Data for Actionable Insights — Access and process raw RCC and engine telemetry, build analytics pipelines, and deliver clear operating views of the fleet. Turn per-instance, per-game, datacenter, and channel signals into dashboards and decision systems that help Engine Infra pack more players onto fewer cores, allocate CPU and memory correctly, and keep multiplexed and large-server processes healthy. Design Experiments & Apply Causal Inference — Lead channel tests, hardware A/Bs, and causal analyses for multiplexing, ARM64 bursting, regional capacity, and edge latency. Measure trade-offs among efficiency, stability, and quality; separate host, container, engine, content, and release effects; and estimate player-experience impact (including latency-sensitive cohorts, not only global averages) so launches ship on evidence. Drive Cross-Functional Collaboration — Partner with Engine Infra, Game Engine, Networking, Matchmaking, Infrastructure, Product, and TPMs, and with teams such as Creator Analytics and Growth, to debug ambiguous production issues and open new capacity and quality opportunities. Shape the Future of Roblox’s Foundation — Influence how Roblox runs live experiences on owned edge and cloud hardware — a more efficient RCC fleet, better regional capacity, lower edge latency, and a platform that stays interactive as we scale toward larger, denser servers. You Have: Advanced degree in Computer Science, Statistics, Engineering, or a related field with a focus on large-scale system analysis. 4+ years as a Data Scientist, with a proven track record of working on high-volume telemetry, product quality optimization. Expertise in processing massive, noisy datasets (like crash logs or telemetry pings) and building scalable pipelines for reporting. Experience using first-principles reasoning to debug complex, ambiguous system failures that don't always have a clear cause. Experience presenting deep technical results to Engineering leaders and using data storytelling to prioritize work and future investment. Nice to Have: Direct experience with game engines or systems performance Experience in game development or working on real-time interactive systems A background or interest in memory management, OS-level interactions, or network stack optimization.
